This DIY Christmas craft project creates a delightful red mini tree (12-13 inches tall) using fresh cranberries. It’s an easy Christmas craft that kids enjoy making and the completed mini tree will add a punch of red color to interior Christmas décor.
Materials Needed to Make Fresh Cranberry Mini Tree
* Fresh cranberries, 3-4 pounds
* One, 12 inch high Styrofoam cone
* Cardboard circle, cut one inch larger than Styrofoam cone base
* Small greenery sprigs from Holly, Boxwood or cedar
* One box of round toothpicks
* Hot glue gun and glue sticks
* Clear spray sealer
Assemble the Mini Tree
Use the hot glue gun to glue the cardboard circle to base of the Styrofoam cone. Center the cardboard so there is a one inch lip all around the base of the Styrofoam cone. This will help stabilize the mini tree and provide a space to glue the greenery at the base of the cranberry mini tree.
Prepare the Fresh Cranberries
Break each toothpick into two pieces – a long and short piece – that equals about 1/3 and 2/3’s of the toothpick. Keep the long and short pieces of the toothpicks separate. Insert the broken ends of the short toothpicks into the stem end of three-fourths of the fresh cranberries. Leave the pointed tip of the toothpick visible. Reserve the remaining one-fourth of fresh cranberries for later use on the mini tree.
Create the Cranberry Mini Tree for Christmas
Start inserting the pointed end of the toothpicks with cranberries on them into the base of the Styrofoam cone. Work around the base towards the top, placing the cranberries as close together as possible on the cone.
When the Styrofoam cone is covered with cranberries, insert the longer pieces of toothpicks into the remaining cranberries. Use these cranberries to fill in any gaps where the Styrofoam cone is showing. Push the toothpick into the Styrofoam until the cranberry rests on the berries already in place.
Add the Greenery and Seal the Cranberry Mini Tree
Place a dot of hot glue on the stem ends of the chosen sprigs of greenery and glue them to the cardboard around the base of the mini tree. Tuck a few of the tiniest greenery sprigs between the cranberries, adding a dot of hot glue to hold into place.
If the greenery at the base of the cranberry mini tree doesn’t have natural berries on it (like Holly berries) hot glue a few leftover cranberries on top of the greenery base.
Spray the completed cranberry mini tree with clear sealer to keep it fresh during the Christmas season.
