So, your child’s a little artist. Oh, the mess, though! All that mixing and dripping and the expense of buying more and more cheap paint sets. Wouldn’t you love it if your kid had a different paint set? One that costs a few cents, you can make it yourself, it has no brushes that have to be cleaned, and it provides a way children can handle the paints without ever getting messy? Wouldn’t that be wonderful? Does such a thing exist? It will when you go to the kitchen and create it!
When making the paints you can choose to do the easy process yourself, and save the little mess involved with these paints, or you can lay out some newspaper and let kids create their own colors. Some old ice trays will help you get started. Use plastic ice trays and not metal ones. If you have trays which make smaller than normal cubes these are ideal.
Another helpful item when making ice cube paints is a set of small bowls or even yogurt containers. Set three containers out and place blue, yellow and red food coloring in them. Add only one color to each cup or bowl. Use a small spoon to scoop food coloring out of each cup and add it to individual ice cube sections. Make at least one cube of each color.
In the other cube sections place mixtures of colors. Make a cube with yellow and red in it to make orange. Make a cube of yellow and blue to make green. Kids have fun combining the various colors to come up with new ones. When the cube tray is filled place it in the freezer. Wait about thirty mintues then remove the cubes if they’re about halfway frozen.
If you’re making tiny ice cube paints you can use things like toothpicks or coffee stirrer sections. Larger cubes can use those handles or even straw sections or wooden skewer pieces. Stand a handle in the center of each cube then place them back in the freezer. When they’re all set and you’re ready to use them set them out for a few minutes to allow them to easily be lifted out of their compartments. Kids can hold the handle while drawing or painting on cardboard, paper or cloth. They’ll have hours of fun since it can take quite a long time for each cube to melt as they paint with it. And the greatest thing of all is that you don’t even have to leave the house to buy more paints when those run out!
