Paper bowls can’t hold liquids but they can hold pine cones, soaps, candy and more. Although you can fashion a paper bowl from nearly any type of paper some types which are really thin simply won’t hold up for long. A really good type of paper to use for making disposable bowls is wallpaper. Rarely do you hang wallpaper and use every last bit of it. Almost always, there’s some wallpaper left. Make beautiful bowls with the leftovers and use them in many different rooms of the house. Wallpaper bowls are lovely and really easy to make!
To make a paper bowl you’ll need a regular bowl or something comparable. A round basket or even a section cut from a 2 or 3-liter soda bottle will work. All you need is something that can help you shape the new bowl.
You can make the bowl using just a piece of wallpaper or you can take an extra step and make a more impressive bowl. If the wallpaper is pre-pasted you can add fabric to one side. Choose cloth that is not stretchy or heavy; the fabric can have any color or design. Cut the fabric to be about a half-inch larger, on all four sides, than the square of wallpaper. Wet the paste and position the fabric on the wallpaper. After it has dried you can begin to create the bowl.
Cut a circle of the wallpaper to start. Of course, a large circle will make a large bowl and a much smaller circle will create a little bowl. The circle you cut, when draped over the chosen bowl or other form, should be larger than that object. If you’ve attached fabric to the wallpaper lay the piece on the upside-down bowl so that the wallpaper is against the bowl and the cloth is on the outside. If you’re using just plain wallpaper lay it on the bowl so that the design is on the outside.
Make tiny pleats around the top of the paper, down a few inches from the top, and make them so that they go all the way around the bowl. These little pleats help shape the bowl; make sure you don’t do so many pleats that you can’t remove the bowl form.
Cut a length of ribbon that you’ll use to tie around the new bowl. It can be helpful to put a dot of glue on one side, stick the middle of the ribbon to it, then bring the ribbon ends around to the front and tie a bow.
Although paper bowls can’t hold heavy objects or liquids they can be used to hold bath and body products, samples, dish towels, stuffed animals, hair accessories and much more!
