There are few possessions I treasure as much as the quilts that have been passed down to me. No matter how hard I try, with time some of them get worn to the point of no return. I am well aware of the time and effort that was put into each quilt. There is just no way that I can part with the quilts even after they are no longer suitable to be displayed on top of a bed.
I am constantly looking for ways to make use of these quilts and display them. There are so many great craft projects that help make use of quilts. I decided to make some picture frames this year to give as gifts for Christmas. It was such an easy task to make a quilted picture frame that I have decided to make quite a few of them. I have included some photographs of the first frame that I finished along with this article.
You will not need many items to get started on making the picture frames. You may have everything you need right in your home. If you find that you need to purchase any of the items listed to complete this craft project, you can click here to find anything you might need. Here are all the items you will need to put together your very own homemade quilted picture frame.
Items Needed For Quilted Picture Frame:
1. An old book
2. Enough quilt to cover the book
5. Cotton balls
6. A Stapler
7. A favorite picture
Quilting The Picture Frame:
The first thing you will need to do is to strip the cover from the book you are going to use. Use your scissors to work the book away from the cover. Be extremely careful using the scissors to snip away bindings. Once you have your book cover ready to use, cut out a shape in the center of one side of the cover. You can use any shape you like. You will notice that I went with an oval shape on my first frame.
Cut the front and back away from the center of the book. Lay your book cover flat on your quilt and cut a piece of the quilt large enough to fold over and completely cover it. Do this for both the front and back of the book cover. Cover the front of your picture frame with the quilt and use your scissors to cut a cross in the center of your book cover.
Lay the cover flat on the piece of quilt and trim excess away. Slip cotton balls into the front of the frame before you begin to glue. Fold the quilt back until it is in place and then use your glue to hold it. Fold the four sides of your quilt piece back and glue each one in place. The side that you glue will never be seen so you do not have to make it perfect. Just be sure to hold it till the glue is fully set.
Repeat this process with the back of the frame. You will not need to cut anything out this time. All you have to do is fold your quilt and slip your cotton balls in to it. Use your scissors to cut away any excess quilt and use your glue to hold it in place. You will also want to cut a piece of the center of the book and cover it for a picture frame stand.
Putting The Quilted Picture Frame Together:
All you have to do now is stack your frame properly. Use your glue to glue three sides of the quilted frame in place. You can use glass or plastic in front of your picture but it is not necessary.
Once you have the frame put together and the glue is fully set, you can add the stand to the back of the frame. The easiest way to do this is to just bend the top of the stand and staple it to the back of the picture frame. Turn the frame over and take a look at the beautiful new way you are going to display a lovely old quilt.
This homemade quilted picture frame craft is so much fun and so easy to do. You might want to consider getting some children involved and making quite a few of them for Christmas gifts. I hope you enjoyed this craft project. Consider clicking here for more of my craft and hobby ideas.
