Okay, so there are several board games on the market today. However, you must admit that creating your own board game, with your own set of rules, would be fun. This task is easy to do if you have any kind of imagination. It will be a rewarding experience for you and your family. Be sure to include the whole family in the process of making your board game. Keep it interesting but simple enough for the entire family.
2 poster boards (you really only need one but the second one is for “just in case”)
Coloring and drawing materials (crayons, colored pencils, markers, pens, pencils, etc.)
1 pack of index cards
Dice (you will only need a pair but having extra is probably a good idea since dice always manage to get lost)
Before you begin drawing your game board, you will need to do some planning. You need to sit down and think of the theme for your game (trivia, start/finish line, like checkers or monopoly, etc.). Once that is finished, come up with some rules or the trivia questions. Sketch how you want the game to look. When all of the details are jotted down on a piece of paper, then you can start to create your own board game.
1. Cut the poster board to fit the size of game you have in mind. If you choose then you can leave the poster board in tact without any cutting. It really depends on how your idea panned out.
2. Draw, with a pencil, the game. Once you have drawn the game then it is now time to color and get creative. If your game has a start/finish line then make sure that you draw obstacles or rewards on the “trail”. If your game is more like Checkers or Monopoly then draw the squares any way you like.
3. On a piece of paper, write down the rules for game play and the object of the game. Fold it up and keep it handy to where everyone can view the rules. On the index cards, write down the trivia questions, if that is how your game is set up. Or use the index cards for the rewards or obstacles of your games.
4. Now is the game to get the player’s tokens. You can use old tokens from other games that are missing pieces and you no longer play. If that does not suite you then you can create custom tokens made out of polymer clay. Just remember to bake the clay before you sit down to play the game.
That’s it! All that is left to do is play the game on family nights. It may take a little while to establish a winner because it is a new game. However, it should be an interesting experience. You can create just one game or you can create several games. It is all up to you. The important thing is to have fun with it and to include your family. Happy gaming everyone!
