Are you on Facebook almost every hour of the day? Do you think about being on Facebook even when your not? If so you’re not alone. Millions of people have made Facebook a big part of their life. Unfortunately there are many addicted to Facebook. According to my terms Facebook addiction is a psychological compulsive need to be on Facebook. Just like any other type of addiction Facebook addiction can be harmful to a person’s overall life. If you are addicted to Facebook the following are some things you can do to help yourself overcome your Facebook addiction.
Admit you are addicted to Facebook. Admission is the first step with any addiction. If you don’t admit you have a problem then you can’t be helped. Ask yourself these questions: Are you on Facebook at least every hour? Do you wake up in the middle of the night with the desire to check your Facebook page? Do you think about Facebook even when your not on Facebook? When you’re out and about are you in search of a computer that would allow you to access your Facebook account? Does Facebook seem to interfere with your job performance, family life or daily routine? If you said, “yes” to most of these questions then you could be addicted to Facebook.
Make a list of the consequences for using Facebook. Many people don’t realize what type of negative impact Facebook has on their lives until they make a list. Think about what Facebook addiction is doing to your job, family environment and your overall life. Maybe you have heard your spouse say, “You don’t spend that much time with me any more. You’re always on Facebook!” Maybe your boss has told you, “If I see you chatting on Facebook I will have to fire you!” If your boss hasn’t told you this yet do you find yourself getting behind at work because you’re frequently on Facebook? Making a list of the consequences helps bring about awareness for many people on what the Facebook addiction is really doing to their lives.
Cancel your Facebook account. Go under the help section on Facebook and email customer service letting them know you want your account cancelled. For some people this is enough to help them overcome their addiction for others it’s not. They end up turning to some other social networking website such as MySpace. If that were the case then you would need to cancel Internet all together.
Seek a professional therapist. Recovering from any addiction alone can be difficult. So find a therapist who specializes in addiction even better yet someone who is familiar with Facebook addiction. The therapist will further help you understand where your Facebook addiction stems from and what you can further do to recover from Facebook addiction.
Don’t allow your addiction to Facebook to continue taking over your life. Take action today by following the suggestions I have provided.
