Nothing is better then making homemade mashed potatoes from scratch. The process of making them can be difficult if you have to peel each potato with a hand held potato peeler. This process can even be difficult if you are using a pairing knife. There are easier ways to go about peeling your potatoes without using a potato peeler or a pairing knife. This article will give you step by step directions on how to peel potatoes without using a potato peeler.
First you are going to fill up a large pot with cold water. Then your going to rinse each potato off in cold water and place each potato in the pot. After your done rinsing enough potatoes for your homemade mashed potatoes or other potato dish place the pot of potatoes on the stove top. Heat on high and boil for about twenty minutes. Put your pot holder mitts on and check your potatoes with a fork to make sure they are all fully cooked. Remove the pot from the stove top and let stand for a few minutes. Put a clean pasta strainer in the sink and using caution slowly pour out the boiling water into the sink. Let the boiled potatoes fall into the strainer. Turn on the cold water and run the water over the steaming hot potatoes. Try to cool each potato individually. Carefully pick up one potato at a time while holding it under cold running water and start peeling the skin off using your fingernails. The skin will easily fall off without struggle.
I find this method to be the easiest way to peel mashed potatoes. If you don’t need to use the potatoes right away, the potatoes can be placed in a covered bowl with the skins still on and refrigerated. The skins will fall off easily even after refrigeration. I often do this if I want to make home fries in the morning. This method saves plenty of time and makes the whole process so much easier. So, if you happen to misplace your peeler or your tired of aching arms this method may be for you.
