Texas hold em poker is a great game where luck and skill go hand and hand. If you have just enough of both than you might find yourself sitting at the final table.
No matter what tournament you are playing in, getting in the money should always be your goal. This should hold true rather you are playing a small Texas hold em poker tournament at someones home, or a huge tournament put on by a casino.
Play Your Cards:
I have found that the easiest way to make it to the final table is to pace yourself and play the winning hands. Now I realize that you must be reading this and thinking that I am just stating the obvious here. The truth of the matter is that oftentimes people get bored in a Texas hold em poker tournament. The players want to be in every hand and they pay to see the flop. Eventually many players find that they have blinded themselves out by trying to catch cards on each and every hand.
Right from the start of the tournament, play the cards you are dealt. Do not let the cards play you. Texas hold em requires a great deal of patience. Don’t try to force your hands in any tournament. More often than not you will not catch and you will take a big hit to your chip stack.
Generally speaking, you will see several people drop out of any Texas hold em poker tournament before the blinds even increase. Oftentimes before the deal even gets all the way around the table. Use this to your advantage and let them take each other out.
See the Cheap Flops:
If your hole cards are descent and you can get into a flop cheap enough than it is worth seeing the flop. If you catch something than make your bets and take down the pot. In most cases, you win enough in one pot to see another 10-20 hands worth of blinds and antes. Use this to your advantage. You only need to play your good cards. Let everyone else knock each other out of the competition. If making it to the end is your only objective, then bide your time, relax, and play solid cards.
Sit back and study:
Many times, I will just sit back, listen to my tunes, and watch my opponents. I watch the way they bet. I watch their reactions to hands. I watch them watching others. I watch and absorb all I can. I basically watch the way they play the game of Texas hold em. You learn a lot about a player by just watching how and when they bet.
Take Advantage of “Call Stations”:
Take advantage of “call stations” in a Texas hold em tournament. A call station is a person ho basically calls any bet within reason. A bet of three times the big blind doesn’t scare them off from making the call with nothing more than a three – eight off suit. If they catch a three on the flop, They are likely to call another five times the big blind. Keep the pressure on these guys. You can really increase your stack off of these guys if you catch them at the right moments.
Taking your time is the number one thing to do if you want to get in the money in a Texas hold em tournament. Let your opponents get on edge. Let them get bored. Let them bet into every hand they see.
Do Not Drink While Playing Texas Hold em Poker:
Another great piece of advice when it comes to Texas hold em strategy is this. Do not drink if you are serious about winning. If you drink, you are greatly effecting your game in more than one way. First your judgment becomes impaired. Next, you might find yourself having a bit too much fun; so much in fact that you may lose sight of your goal which is making it into the money. Drinking will make you far less patient, and soon you will find that you are playing many more hands than you normally would.
Sit back and watch them fall around you.
