If time allows, start studying at least a week or so in advance. You don’t have to overwhelm yourself with information when you have plenty of time to prepare so you are afforded the luxury of breaking up your study material into smaller, more digestible parts for memorization. Lots of students forget about their test until the last minute and they are forced to stay up all night and cram information in their brain until they can’t think anymore. Try not to be one of those students. If you want a good quality education you should take the time to really learn the material and not just store it in your short-term memory.
After you feel that you’ve got a good grasp of the material, take the time to quiz yourself. Often times, what we thought we knew we realize we don’t when the question is presented to us. It’s a horrible feeling when we choke on a test that we felt sure about. Thinking you know the material and actually knowing the material is two different things. Make sure you’ve truly got an understanding of the material before you move on to the next subject. It might take a few extra minutes to ask yourself these questions, but it will surely pay off in the long run when you’re sweating it out in the hot seat during exam time.
Take the time to visualize success. Get rid of any possible roadblocks that would stand in your way of getting an exceptional grade on this exam. Prepare yourself to do with possible feelings and emotions dealing with this test. Put yourself in the hot seat and imagine that you are actually in the classroom taking your exam. How do you feel? Anxious and nervous? Scared? Tired? Think of ways to combat that stress, whether by taking a deep breath, imagining some place that makes you feel safe, or just repeating in your mind that you are smart and have what it takes to succeed. And often overlooked, you should remember to get enough rest the night before the test and a good breakfast in the morning!
If you walk into that classroom prepared for success you should have no problem getting a good grade on this test. If you believe in your abilities, study hard, quiz yourself, get enough sleep, and eat a good breakfast you should come out on top. These are the keys to success in the test-taking world. And don’t forget: Never be afraid of failure. Just go out there and do your best. Good luck!
