Anyone who has ever used one of the higher end Texas Instruments calculators knows how advanced they are. What many people don’t realize, however, is that games can be installed on these calculators as well. Don’t expect to be blown away with next-generation graphics, or even cell phone game quality graphics, but there are some great time wasters available.
Installing games on your TI-84+ is quite easy once you’ve got the hang of it. For this process, you will need a TI-84+ calculator and a mini-USB cable (which was most likely supplied with the calculator. You will also need to download the TI Connect software, which you can get HERE, and the ION shell software, which can be downloaded HERE.
Once you have downloaded the above software, first, install the TI Connect software on your computer by double-clicking the installation file. This will allow you to transfer files to your TI-84+ calculator (the TI Connect software is also compatible with many other Texas Instruments calculators). Now plug your TI-84+ into your computer using the Mini-USB cable and turn the calculator on. Now, extract the contents of the ION file into a directory on your computer. Once done, highlight all of the files and right click the selection area. You will be able to select the “Send to TI device…” option, which will now be available due to installing the TI Connect software.
Once the file transfer is complete, press the PRGM button on your TI-84+ and execute the ION file listed and wait for the “ION Installed” Confirmation message. Now you will need to archive the ION software. This can be done by pressing the 2nd key, then the plus key, then 2, and then 7. You will now see three programs starting with “Ion,” each of which should be selected and press Enter on each. You can verify that each was archived by noticing the “*” next to each file.
Go to Ticalc.orgto find games available to download for your TI-84+ calculator. Once you have downloaded the desired games, extract them, and then use the “Send to TI device…” option again to transfer them to your TI-84+ (be sure to select “Archive” as the location. You will now be able to select from your installed games by pressing the PRGM button on your calculator.
Enjoy your new games, but be sure to keep paying attention is class!
