Repairing metal objects is a skill that may come in more handy around your home than you think. Take a look around you and try to notice just how much home décor you have that is made of metal. Metal gets dented and bent over time through use, abuse and misuse. Learning the proper way to repair metal objects can become a skill put to use in many ways over a lifetime.
Rust is the devil to metal’s solid gold humanity. One of the best ways to destroy a metal object in your house is to allow it to rust. Remove loose particles of rust by using a wire brush. If you have an electric drill, you may also be able to clean rust from metal by using a wire wheel attachment. After brushing away the loose rust with the brush, use a piece of coarse sandpaper and sand away until the metal is shiny. Dip a piece of cloth into some paint thinner and wipe the metal surface.
Dents are a by-product of making things out of metal. The best way to bang a dent out of metal is to hold the metal object flat against a solid material that has some give to it. Fill up a bag with some sand and you have the perfect surface for banging out dents in metal. Use a mallet to bang against the raised side of the dent. Another way to go after a metal ding is to use a small hammer by striking the side with the flat face of the hammer. Make sure you hold a block of wood on the opposite side of the metal object when trying this approach.
One of the best way to make sure your metal object lives a good long life free of rust is to paint the object with rust-resistant paint. Store the object in a dry place. You may find you need to clean a metal object that has been tarnished over time. The commercial polishes you see for bringing back the lust of metal are fine, but you can also dissolve some Crayola chalk in water until you’ve made a metal cleaning paste.
That portable drill accessorized with an abrasive disk can be used for buffing a piece of metal when the object is stationary. Run the drill at a high speed and move the disc evenly across the metal surface for best results.
