Parchment Paper. Use parchment paper when cooking. It is great not only when cooking cakes and cookies, but can be used for frozen pizzas, french fries, heating sandwiches, toasting bread, etc. Another great thing about using parchment paper is there is no messy clean up. By wiping off any crumbs it can be used over and over again.
Seasoning Salt. Instead of using chicken broth that can get expensive try seasoning salt. When cooking poultry in the crock pot don’t add chicken broth save money by adding water and a couple tablespoons of seasoning salt. The seasoning salt also works in soups, stews, roast, and other recipes that call for chicken, beef, or vegetable broth.
Non-stick Cooking Spray. Many recipes call for a pan to be greased or buttered. This not only adds extra calories, but becomes expensive. Use non-stick cooking spray the next time a recipe calls for a greased or buttered pan, it will save time and money. Another tip is to use non-stick cooking spray instead of oil. When deep frying vegetables becomes time consuming and expensive turn to non-stick cooking spray. Spray a deep frying pan, add seasoned flour coated vegetables, and cover to retain moisture. Keep heat on medium and the ‘deep-fried’ vegetables will be done much quicker and healthier too.
Crock pot. A crock pot is a wonderful invention that should be embraced by cooks who are short on time. On way to use a crock pot is to bake potatoes. Baking potatoes can take hours in the oven or on the grill and tend to not taste near as good when cooked in the microwave. When baked potatoes are on the menu try them in the crock pot. Start by washing potatoes, poking holes in each one with a fork, lay them on a piece of aluminum foil, drizzle oil on each one, add salt, wrap in foil, and place in crock pot. Turn crock pot to low for 6 to 8 hours or on high for 4 hours. This kitchen appliance will save time and most can be washed in the dishwasher.
Buttermilk. There are quite a few recipes that call for buttermilk. The problem is that buttermilk can be expensive and the recipe may only call for 1/2 cup leaving the rest to waste in the refrigerator. When recipes call for buttermilk try this instead: use 1 cup of regular 2% or whole milk and add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. The milk mixture will need to set for 5 to 10 minutes. Stir lightly and use it in the recipe.
Pancakes. Store bought pancake mix can be quite expensive. Here is an easy way to make pancakes that uses simple ingredients that are already on hand allowing money to be saved. Only a few items are needed. First, measure 1½ cups of self-rising flour and pour into a medium-sized bowl. Add 1 egg. Stir in milk slowly until batter is thin enough to pour, but will still hold its shape in the pan. Enjoy!
Applesauce. Applesauce can be used as a cheap substitute for a couple of items. The first item that applesauce can be used as a substitute is oil in recipes. Also, it can be used in place of eggs. If used in baking, the applesauce can also replace butter making applesauce a great cheap item to keep on hand at all times.
Honey. Honey is a very expensive item that can be substituted using sugar. Sugar is very inexpensive. To substitute sugar for honey it needs to be mixed as follows: combine 1¼ cups of sugar with 1/4 cup of water which will make the recipe cost much less and still taste yummy!
Electric Kettles. A great short cut when cooking is to use an electric kettle. The kettle will heat water much quicker than on the stove. Place a pot on the stove. Fill with just a little water and turn on burner. When the water in the kettle is hot, pour it into the pot and add pasta or other ingredients. This tip will help reduce time quite a bit when making several different dishes.
