Snacks do not have to be a bad thing, it is just a matter of picking healthy snacks to munch on. When we were kids we were always told snacks were bad, but then again, most of the time they were. Stuffing yourself on sugary and salty treats is not good for the body. Fresh snacks are much better and much healthier. You don’t have to cut out your favorites though, but save those candy bars, sodas and salty chips for special occasions and remember to eat them in moderation.
Healthy snacks can add vitamins into the body. They are both nourishing and they promote health and help keep the immune system running right so that we don’t get sick as often. Snacking right can be healthy for the heart, it can lower cholesterol, it can promote weight loss and it can even give you more energy to get through each day, in a productive way.
For the munchies there are a variety of choices in snacks. If you like vegetables (or even if you don’t) you can snack on some celery. Add some peanut butter for a different flavor and some protein for energy. Snack on some broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and green pepper. Try them with a light vegetable dip, or alone. For something more like junk food you can try rice cakes or some unsalted, butter free popcorn. Nuts are a great snack that is filled with protein energy, try almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts or cashews (unsalted, of course). Avoid salt because it can lead to swelling of the joints. Seeds are good too, like sunflower seeds.
If you are looking for a smoother treat try some cheese. String cheese is real cheese and it is healthy, in moderation. Always opt for white cheese, like mozzarella and ricotta. Or, if you have a sweet tooth, instead of picking sugary snacks try strawberries, or other berries. Apples make a great snack raw or baked. Even dried fruits can be good snacks, including raisins.
If it’s a thirst kind of snack you are going for skip the soda. Try unsweetened juices, fat-free milk, hot cocoa or tomato juice. If you are ambitious you can grab a blender and make your own fruit or veggie smoothies.
All of these snack ideas are great for both children and adults. Come up with different smoothies or different medleys of fruits and nuts to keep the taste buds begging for more. Coming up with healthy snacks at home can be fun and interesting and you’ll never get bored with all of the choices. So, next time you want a candy bar or some gummies, opt for the healthy alternative instead!
