The Facebook game Mafia Wars, published by Zynga, has quickly become one of the most popular casual online games on the planet. The premise of the game is that you are an up and coming mobster using illicit tactics to gain money, items, and power. Despite being a free-to-play Facebook game, the game provides a wide variety of game play options to players. One of those options is fighting.
While fighting is only one of many things you can do in Mafia Wars, it is possible to specialize your character in order to almost exclusively fight. Due to the mechanics of leveling, gaining money, and gaining items, this can be very difficult if you do not prepare in very specific ways. This guide will reveal what you need to do to focus your character primarily on fighting.
Energy – Energy is the primary attribute required to perform jobs, as opposed to stamina which is the primary attribute required to fight. While fighting does not require energy, you will need energy, at least at first, in order to gain some early levels. Even if you only intend to fight, for your first 10-20 levels, you should place all of your discretionary attribute points into energy and only do jobs. This will help you gain early levels and more importantly, help you gain early money and equipment. After you have a head start, you will never invest in energy again.
Stamina – Stamina is essential for fighting, because each fight requires one point of stamina. Once you have completed your head start levels, you will want to put about half of your discretionary points into stamina. Because you aren’t completing jobs, you will get fewer discretionary points than players who focus on jobs and energy, so be very careful when spending these points. Technically, you get a better experience ratio from spending stamina on fights than you do from spending energy on jobs, but this ignores the fact that you will need to also spend attribute points on attack to fight effectively.
Attack – This attribute is basically just as important as stamina, because your attack attribute has significant effect on your ability to win fights. You will want to spend approximately half of your discretionary attribute points on attack at first and eventually you will probably be spending about 75% of your discretionary attribute points on attack, when your stamina attribute is at least 400 or so. While it may seem tempting to spend points on defense, too, don’t waste your attribute points on this.
Money – Since you aren’t increasing your health attribute, money is essential. You will need money to head to the hospital and heal yourself between fights. Use the starting money you got during your early levels to invest in properties and continue to invest in properties until you are earning significant money each day. An early investment can get you enough money to never have to worry about affording hospital fees. In addition, if you are tight on cash, use robbery instead of fighting. Your attributes will make you good at robbery and robbery provides a higher consistent income than fighting at the cost of a worse stamina to experience ratio.
Equipment – Armor, weapons, vehicles, and animals are essential to winning fights. You will need one of each per mafia member and the higher the attributes of the items the better you will fight. When obtaining items, you only care about the attack value of your items since your defense score will not help you fight. Conveniently, loot drops are incredibly common while fighting and almost all of the loot in the game can be obtained from fighting. Thus, fighting often will actually make you a better fighter.
Mafia Members – The size of your mafia is the most important attribute for fighting. In order to consistently win fights, you need a mafia with 501 members. Since you probably don’t have 501 Facebook friends playing the game, there are only two ways to get this. The first way is to spend real world money. If you buy enough reward points you can buy extra mafia members with those reward points. This is an expensive proposition likely to cost you about $50 – $100. Your other option is to join a Mafia Wars guild. Guilds advertise in the forums. Joining the guild basically means becoming friends with a lot of strangers. If you don’t really care about your Facebook account, this may be the best choice for you.
Cities – While the game starts you in New York, this is not the best place to fight, unless you are trying to get certain achievements. Once you unlock Cuba, win 1000 fights in Cuba and you will earn an achievement which will give you a discretionary attribute point to spend. Bangkok and Russia are by far the best places to fight, for different reasons. In Bangkok, you want to fight anyone with a Triad symbol next to their name. After about 700 fights you will have earned enough reputation with the Yakuza to buy the Ammo Trading Camp property. This will get you free attack boosts every day. Also if you have at least 1400 reputation with the Yakuza, you can buy very powerful attack equipment. The reason to fight in Russia is very different. It is easiest to earn money from properties in Russia and relative cost for healing is lowest in Russia. So, by fighting in Russia, you can heal more quickly and conveniently.
