Acid staining concrete countertops can give the concrete a professional appearance and a completely unique finish. Acid staining concrete does not create a perfectly even color, rather the surface of the concrete appears mottled and textured. Once stained, the concrete should then be sealed to protect the color as well as create a surface suitable for food preparation if necessary.
Keep in mind that acid concrete stain is translucent, and will highlight imperfections in the counter. You should also be careful when applying and removing stain, different techniques will achieve varying color depth and patterns. Consider practicing your technique before using the stain on your kitchen counter.
Step 1: Clean the countertops with a household cleaner that will remove any dirt or food on the counter. Wipe the counter down with water to remove any residue, then allow the kitchen countertops to dry completely before continuing.
Step 2: Cover any areas you do not wish to stain with painter’s tape. Put a drop cloth on the floor to catch any drips.
Step 3: Apply the acid stain to the concrete. Wait several hours or until the stain has completely dried before proceeding.
TIP: When acid staining concrete, wear old clothes and wear gloves to protect your skin. Eye protection is also a good idea.
Step 4: Spray down the kitchen countertop generously with water. Using a scrub brush, try to lift the excess stain from the surface of the concrete counter. Remove the dirty water using rags. Continue scrubbing to remove excess stain until the water on the surface of the concrete is clear.
Step 5: Sprinkle baking soda on the concrete countertop and then spray generously with water. The baking soda will neutralize the remaining acid on the concrete countertop. Remove the baking soda mixture with damp rags.
Step 6: Wipe the counter with a dry cloth until it is no longer wet. Allow the concrete countertop to dry completely before continuing.
Step 7: Apply a coat of concrete sealant to the finished acid stained countertops using a small paint roller. You may want to apply two coats to properly cover and protect the surface. Keep the surface of the counters clear for at least 48 hours, once the sealant is completely dried it is safe to place objects on them.
