The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles is the state agency responsible for issuing learners permit and drivers licenses. To get a permit, a test is required to prove the requisite knowledge of Virginia traffic laws and road rules. An applicant for a Virginia drivers permit should first get a copy of the drivers manual and study that to learn the important safety and operational rules. After studying the manual and any other drivers ed courses or programs, the test taker should continue to prepare by finding and taking several Virginia permit practice tests.
Go to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) “Office Locations” page at dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/utilities/offices.asp to find a local drivers license office. Head there to get a Virginia drivers manual to study for your permit test or use the pages below to find the applicable licensing manual/study guide. Be careful to study the correct manual, as there are different Virginia learners permit tests for motorcycles, standard automobiles and commercial vehicles (trucks, buses, etc.). You can also use the manuals to start taking some Virginia permit practice tests.

Most residents have to take a Virginia drivers education course before getting a learners permit. If you have to take a course, you may as well make good use of those study materials and related permit practice tests. Just make sure you use materials from recent drivers ed courses because Virginia traffic laws may have changed.
If you go to DMV.org’s Virginia testing page, you can take one free practice permit test for the Virginia drivers permit. You can also decide whether to purchase a paid practice exam with up to 100 questions. The paid practice permit exams range from about $10 to $15. Access the page at dmv.org/va-virginia/practice-tests/.
The Virginia DMV conveniently offers its own license/permit practice tests. Go to the “Sample Knowledge Exams” page at dmv.state.va.us/dmvweb/kats/sne_intro.asp. You can take a practice permit test for all three types of Virginia drivers permits (regular. commercial drivers and motorcycles). These are free sample tests, as well.
Use the FreeDMVPracticeTests website to find a Virginia DMV permit practice test for road signs and either regular cars, commercial vehicles for a CDL license or motorcycles. All of these quizzes have 20 sample questions and cost nothing to take. Visit the Virginia driver’s license test page at freedmvpracticetests.com/va-virginia to take the exams.
