The first thing that you have to do is connect your iPod to the computer. To do this use the usb cable that came with the iPod. iTunes may open ans ask you to sync up with your iPod but you need to tell it no.
Open up the iPod folder which is often the F menu but may be different if you have other menus. It will say that it is iPod though so you can find it easily. With Vista you will need to clik organize but in XP you will want to open the folder, click tools, followed by folder, next View tab, then hit hidden folders, and finally apply.
A new folder will open and you only need to worry about the iPod control. Open that folder then the music folder. Copy these files onto the computer you can make a special folder for this or put them on the desktop. If you have lots of files you will want to make a special folder. Go out to the desktop and right click then hit new and then folder. This will make a new folder that you can name and place your files in.
To place these songs in iTunes you will want to open iTunes and place the folder or copy the folder into the music section of the library. Now that you have done that you can sync the iPod to the computer and not worry about losing your files. You can do this in multiple computers if you wish before you sync up the iPod to the computer. You can also just not sync up the two if you don’t need to.
