UK drivers who have changed their name or address must inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) of any changes. Here’s how to update your details with DVLA.
Apply Online for Address Changes
Address details can be changed quickly and simply online, provided you have all the necessary documentation. Both parts of the photocard licence will be required in order to apply online for a new British driving licence. In addition, you must also be a British resident, meet the minimum eyesight requirement and not be disqualified from driving for any reason (i.e. medical reasons, or a revoked licence) and you must be able to provide your address for the past three years. Photos that are about to expire will need to be renewed by post.
If you are applying to change your address and you have the old paper licence, you must have a valid UK passport or another form of identity. UK drivers who do not have both parts of the photocard licence (the photocard in addition to the paper counterpart) will be required to pay a fee.
Name and Address Changes by Post
If you need to change your name and/or address, you will need to send in your current photocard driving licence to be amended by DVLA. Photocard licence holders should complete the ‘changes’ section on the paper counterpart, sign the form and then date it. Both parts of the driving licence (i.e. the photocard and the paper counterpart) must be submitted to the following address:
Complete D1 ‘Application for a Driving Licence’, which is available from the DVLA form ordering service or from any Post Office® branch. When you need to change your name on your driving licence, you must include original identity documents, and enclose both parts to the driving licence. Paper licence holders should complete the same form and send the completed form to the same address as photocard licence holders.
UK driving licence photos can be renewed at any time. However, if your driving licence photo is about to expire, you should aim to renew it before it expires. Check section 4b on the front of your driving licence to see if the photo is getting close to the expiration date.
It is important to keep your address and/or name current with DVLA so that reminders and correspondence can be sent to the right address and licence holder. Apply online to change your address quickly with DVLA and check section 4b to see if your licence photo is about to expire.
