According to fileinfo.com, an ISO file is a disc image file that contains an exact duplicate of data from the original disc. Therefore, instead of needing the CD, you can use MagicDisc to mount ISO files and play them on the computer as if you had the disc. There are other emulators that work as well, such as Daemon Tools and UltraISO, and this article will generally work for them as well.
You can’t use MagicDisc to mount ISO files until you have the software to do so. Most virtual drive managers are free and can be downloaded with a simple Google search. Once installed, run the program. At first, nothing will appear because it will be running in the background. Go to the lower right corner of the screen where it shows the programs running in the background. There should be a MagicDisc logo. Right click on the logo to bring up the menu.
Select the first option, which should say something similar to “Virtual Drive.” This will open up another drop down menu showing what ISO files are currently mounted. Hovering the mouse over that will create another drop down menu, giving you the option to mount a file to the drive. Clicking on this will bring up an explorer window to locate the ISO file you wish to mount. Finding it and opening it will successfully mount it to your virtual drive.
After you use MagicDisc to mount the ISO file, your computer believes that the CD for this program is in your computer. You can then go to “my computer” and open the program. This will allow you to run it like normal. This will work when you are trying to run the ISO file as a CD, or DVD. Most virtual drive managers can also read any BIN, IMA, PDI, and VDI files.
You can do more than just use MagicDisc to mount ISO files. Most virtual drives allow you to burn CD or DVD’s from ISO files using virtually the same steps you would to mount the file. Right click on the MagicDisc logo in the right hand corner, hover the mouse over the Virtual Drive, hover over the new drop down menu, and click the option to burn CD/DVD image. If you do not already have the burning capabilities, you will need to download those as well since they are an add on feature.
By knowing how to use MagicDisc to mount ISO files, you can de-clutter your room of unnecessary CD’s and run programs that were originally impossible.
