Usually, crafters and artisans list their items on websites like Etsy and Artifire in order to make some extra income. But what about volunteering your skills to help the needy? The concept is hardly anything new as organizations of crafters, such as Crafting Comfort, have been taking handmade items to hospital patients for years in an effort to brighten up their day.
Crafting for a cause is a great way to make a lasting donation, especially if you cannot financially support an organization. You are probably already calculating the hours you are going to spend making scarves or woven baskets and thinking that you do not have that much time to dedicate. Don’t worry, even if fitting long volunteer hours into your already busy schedule seems like a daunting task there are still many ways you can make a difference with your crafting skills.
Make something with love.
Maybe you can make something out of the goodness of your heart. Even if it is just one thing, it can still make a difference in someone’s day. For instance, many parents who spend hours in the NICU with their premature or unhealthy babies are gifted crocheted hats. It may seem like a small gesture, but even something like a crocheted hat for a premature baby can make a struggling parent’s worst nightmare seem a little brighter.
Make something that a charitable organization can use.
Many local charitable organizations need help in lots of ways. For instance, maybe a new shelter has opened and they need a little help sprucing up the place. If you and a group of friends get together you would easily be able to make curtains for the windows or quilts for the bed. You could do the same for an office or even your neighbor.
There are many ways you can volunteer through your craft. It just takes a little elbow grease and some creativity. Maybe there is a walk for a cause going on and you can volunteer to screen print some t-shirts. You can also crochet washcloths for an emergency center or sew cloth diapers for babies poverty stricken areas.
Find a group.
If you find that you do have a lot of time to spare, you can always get involved in a full blown volunteering campaign. For instance, you can join a local group that makes handmade gifts for children in hospitals or people in nursing homes. You can even find crafting projects to support or troops overseas and veterans.
Volunteering by making crafts is a great way to get involved in the community. Whether you want to be involved with an organization or just do some things on your own time, crafting for a cause is a wonderful way to put a smile on someone’s face.
