Have you been wondering how to whiten your yellow whites? Sometimes it seems almost impossible to get them white again. It is frustrating that white clothing does not last as long as colored clothing. Save your whites by preventing yellowing and bleaching it out when you have to.
Pre-treat with Laundry Detergent
Pre-treat the yellow or other stains on your solid whites using your favorite liquid laundry detergent. Place the garment in a sink with no water in it. Pour liquid laundry detergent directly onto the stain. Let it set for at least twenty four hours.
If Your Yellow Whites Have Color
If your yellow whites have color on them too, do not bleach them, but put them in a regular wash load with the normal amount of detergent that you use directly after the pre-treating method above. It is more difficult to whiten your yellow whites when they have color on them.
Bleach Your Solid Whites
After you have pretreated your stained solid white laundry, it is time to launder it with bleach. Make sure that you have sorted your laundry so that only solid whites, and those that call for bleach on their label, get bleached. I personally bleach all solid whites as long as they are not dry clean only garments. This is the best way to whiten yellow whites.
Wash your solid whites using the hottest water level you can under regular cycle with the normal amount of laundry detergent that you use. In addition, pour one cup of bleach into the bleach dispenser or directly into the wash load as soon as the water level is full. Do not pour bleach directly onto the clothes or laundry.
When the wash cycle is done, reset the washer again, but this time do not use laundry detergent or bleach. This second full cycle is to rinse the clothes. It is important if you have individuals with allergies in the family.
If your whites are still not white enough to your liking, do not put them in the dryer yet. The dryer sets in stains. Repeat the pre-treating step and leave them soaking for two days and then repeat the bleach step. This should whiten your yellow whites quickly.
If your clothes still aren’t white, use them to do yard work and prevent the yellowing in the first place next time.
Prevent Whites From Yellowing in The First Place
Prevention is the key to whiten your yellow whites. Always bleach your solid whites every time you wash them even if you do not see stains. Never wash and dry your solid whites without using bleach in the wash cycle.
