It is a different world than the one we had grown up in, even just a few short years ago. The standards of living are better, the expectancy of life is greater, the quality of the product we are given at marketplace is greater, and the overall value for our experience is that much more. it was with that in mind when I was recently visiting some family in the seaside town of Newport Rhode Island, that I and my wife had opted to stay at the Howard Johnson Inn in the Newport neighborhood of Middletown, RI.
My wife has very severe asthma so she is usually very sensitive to foreign places. That is one of the primary reasons we never ‘stay’ anywhere. Still, when we came down to Newport (or more accurately Middletown) to see my cousin graduate from the adjacent Navy Officer Training Corps, we had been inside of this hotel property for the better part of the evening, largely without incident. We were set to take off around 10pm when I caved and decided we would be okay staying the night at the Newport Howard Johnson.
For those who don’t know the Howard Johnson name they are a property which has been around in hospitality for some time and were once paramount in the hotel industry. The Howard Johnson brand had been bought out and minimized and from my first impressions it seemed to me that this once great champion of industry had quickly become just another name along the highway of sameness.
Maybe it was the cool November breeze off the ocean, maybe it was the warm temperatures for the time of the year, more likely it was the fact that I was able to see my dear old mom and gram as well as my newly minted cousin who had just graduated the Naval Officer Training Corps and her family, but my experience at the Howard Johnson Inn Newport RI was very good. The rooms were largely clean, the mattress we slept on was comfortable and the hotel had a variety of other things which made it a great destination on the Newport side of the Jamestown and Newport Bridges.
Howard Johnson Inn Newport RI was a wonderful property for the value driven consumer looking for an alternative to many of the far more expensive downtown Newport properties. At the Howard Johnson you are close to downtown Newport without having to pay those excessive rates, you don’t need to cross the toll bridge to get into the city, and there is enough going on in Middletown that you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg dining out at fancy destinations with funny food.
The dressings of the property were clean lines and nothing all that fancy. However the care which the maintenance and housekeeping staffs had taken in keeping the property appearing to look its best was good enough for me.
The Howard Johnson Inn Newport RI had an attached Applebee’s restaurant which served food even as late as when my wife and I checked into the joint. We did not eat there but Applebee’s is a name which stands well enough on its own.
Howard Johnson Inn Newport RI also had a wonderfully appointed indoor swimming pool which we did take full advantage of for both swimming and lounging and socializing on the pool deck. There were video games in the hallway and this pinball wizard couldn’t help himself to be lured in for a quick game of my own. Simple vending machines, a free 24 hour instant coffee/tea/hot chocolate station completed the package and we were free to go as we wanted.
Howard Johnson Inn Newport RI in Middletown would be a place I would definitely go back to again. Especially if you are just there for reasons that don’t have anything to with Newport per se or you happen to be there in the down season, you can save a lot of money and still have a great time at Howard Johnson Inn in Newport, RI in Middletown.
