The other day I took a drive down one of the main streets in my town. I hadn’t been down that street for a while, so I expected there might be some changes, but I didn’t expect to be as shocked as I was by what I saw.
When I moved here sixteen years ago, this town was bursting at the seams. Construction was going on everywhere. New homes were being built as fast as they could be. New businesses were opening almost daily, or so it seemed. Everyone in town seemed to be prospering.
The street I drove down the other day was one of the busiest in town.
. . . . .Back then.
Today, much of the street seems deserted. Everywhere I looked, businesses were closed and boarded up.
The ones that were still open were trying everything to attract customers, but their parking lots were pretty much empty.
About the only places that seemed full were the taverns and pubs.
To say I was shocked is to put it mildly. Even saying it was depressing is an understatement.
A day or so later, an old acquaintance stopped by my house. I hadn’t seen him in about three years so we had some real catching up to do. The last time I had talked with him, he was gainfully employed in the sales field, enjoying what he was doing, confident in his future.
I expected to hear he was still at his job, but he wasn’t. Once the “recession” really hit in 2008, he lost that job. In the nearly three years since, he has been “bumped” (fired, actually) from a couple of different positions, not because he was incompetent, but because his employers just couldn’t afford to keep him on the payroll. This, despite the fact that both of these positions paid him a lot less money than he had been making three years ago.
Just a week or so ago, I heard President Obama say the economy is moving in the right direction. He talked about 65,000 new jobs being created in the month of July, as if that were some great achievement.
However, in the month of July, two more friends of mine lost their jobs. One had been working at the same job for 24 years, the other at hers for over 10 years. A third friend has sent out several hundred resumes in the past eighteen months, and hasn’t even received a nibble from a prospective employer.
Tell them the economy is moving in the right direction!
In actual fact, in July and August, the economic growth declined again. In January it stood at about 5 per cent. Now it’s only 1.2 per cent. How is that the right direction, Mr. President?
It’s been nearly two years since the big $800 plus billion “stimulus” package was foisted upon America- the stimulus that was supposed to keep unemployment below 8.2 per cent. The stimulus that was going to create between 2.5 and 3.5 million new jobs.
Where are those jobs?
The friends I mentioned above are not even a drop in the bucket! Figures at the end of last month showed unemployment rates had jumped to 9.6 per cent. That means somewhere near 17 million Americans are out of work. But that’s not even an accurate figure! How many millions have just given up even looking for work? The actual unemployment figure is around 22 per cent!
Around our area of town, new houses that went on the market in 2007 and 2008, are now being listed as foreclosures. In many cases, people are just walking away because they can’t afford to make their mortgage payments any longer. Hundreds of new and nearly new houses sit empty. No one is buying because nobody can afford to. And there’s obviously no new construction going on, so thousands of tradesmen are either sitting home idle, or they have left for greener pastures elsewhere. (Good luck with that!)
I don’t know what the people in Washington D. C. are thinking, but this is reality. This is what’s really happening in my town, and in towns all over America.
Meanwhile, with an election coming up, our politicians are up to their old tricks- slamming their opponent, slinging mud, telling outrageous lies about each other, then promising us the moon and asking us to please vote for them this November.
Not ONE political ad I’ve seen, (and we’ve been seeing them since back in April!), has said anything constructive, or has offered any REAL solutions to the situation most of us are facing. Everybody is quick to jump all over the other guy and tell us how evil he and his party is, but nobody has any answers.
And NOBODY has the guts to come out and say what we already know: America is broke- the system is broken, and we don’t know how to fix it!
President Obama has just announced another $100 billion program- just in time to campaign for a lot of
his Democrat colleagues who are in serious danger of being dumped in November. But what’s his answer to our problem? Throw more money at it! Money fixes everything. Only it doesn’t. Especially when we don’t have it to begin with! But he doesn’t seem to know or care that there isn’t anything left- the public purse is empty. It doesn’t matter- just start up the government presses and print more. Or borrow more from the Chinese.
Despite the ridiculous claims of both parties, the real fact is the people who are governing us don’t know how to govern! We are being led down the path to total destruction by self-serving megalomaniacs who simply lust for power and don’t give a hoot what happens to the country!
Somehow, when I listen to any of these guys, I get the feeling they must live in a cocoon or something. Is there somehing in the water in D.C. or what? They obviously don’t know what’s happening in what they like to call “Mainstream” America.
I don’t see any of them having to give up their home, or go live with relatives because the bank, (probably one WE bailed out), took their home away.
I don’t see them going to food banks because there’s no money to buy food. I don’t see any of them walking because they can’t buy gas for their car, or even afford busfare.
I don’t see them suffering the embarrassment of using food stamps at the checkout counter.
I don’t see any of them having to panhandle- to beg others for help- on the streetcorner, just to get enough money to eat tonight!
But I see all of these things in my town every day!
Most of the people in D.C. have been there for decades. Most of them have been living high, wide and handsome at the public’s expense for a long time. They can point fingers all they want, and blame everybody else but the simple fact is they’re ALL to blame for the mess we’re in. The situation America finds herself in did not develop overnight! The same people who are pointing fingers right now are the ones who brought us to this condition in the first place.
But WE too, Mr. and Mrs. Average American, have to shoulder at least some of the blame. We’re the ones who cast the ballots and send these same people back to Washington, even KNOWING who they are and what they are.
If we really wanted things to change, come election day we would turn every last one of them out on their ear, and never let any of them back in again!
Unfortunately, that won’t happen. Sure, come November 6 we’ll see some new faces. But most of the same old guard that has DESTROYED America will be right back there, picking right up where they left off, and probably laughing up their sleeves at the way they’ve put one over on us again!
There’s an old proverb that states, “Where there is no vision, the people perish!” Our politicians lack any vision, except as it pertains to their own desires. And it seems we, the American people, have no vision either .We’re just letting it happen to us!
How much longer can we keep this up? One year, two maybe. Anyone with any common sense can see we’re heading for the biggest fall any nation ever took. When that fall comes, just like Humpty Dumpty, all the king’s horses and all the kings men won’t be able to put us back together again.
America, my beloved country, I weep for you!
