Proper preparation of your Christmas tree is important before you decide to recycle your tree. It will help you decide exactly what you want to do with the tree. The tree needs to be completely clean of all tinsel, lights or whatever else you have on your tree. Because in order to properly recycle the tree, it must be bare in order to make the remains useable. The next step is to read the section below for helpful hints on what to do next. There is a section for plastic/ fake trees and a section on real trees.
Disposal of Plastic/Fake Christmas Trees
This section is easy enough but very important if you care about the environment. There are some options of crafting with your old tree. You can make present toppers by cutting off branches and shaping them by using your imagination. With this in mind, maybe you know of some crafting groups that will make good use of your old tree.
Donation centers will also take the tree if it still looks nice enough to use again, you can use your best judgment to decide this. There is no point in wasting a perfectly good tree if someone will appreciate it in their home for the season. If donation is in mind, make sure to ask friends and family first for a friendly gesture.
Lastly, but known to most people is that you can call your waste management office to see if you should bring the tree directly there or if they have a pick up day in the community. The people that work there will be happy to properly dispose of your tree and give you directions. But hopefully you make this your last option considering you are adding to the waste pile which is a concern for our environment.
Many Ways to Dispose of a Real Christmas Tree
There are many more options for the disposal of a real Christmas tree because it is actually good for the environment in many ways to dispose of it.
The first thing I will mention may give you a great idea or maybe you already know. People up in the cold temperatures have ice fishing. When ice fishing, you may leave a hole in the ice and for safety reasons it is a good idea to cover the hole if you leave it so nobody drives over it. A great idea to cover the hole is with your old Christmas tree. This is just fine because once the ice melts on the lake, it is just fine for the tree to sink to the bottom of the water. Because it is great for the fish habitat that lurks below.
Composting trees are great for the environment or for your personal needs. Because sending your tree through a wood chipper or chopping it up as finely as possible can be great for mulch. Mulch is great for your animals stalls, gardens, or making trails. This mulch usually stops most weeds from growing so using it has benefits. If you have no use for the mulch, there are many programs that would love to dispose of your tree for you.
Department of Natural Resources (DNR) can give you ideas of where to take your tree, because they usually will take the tree for you to bed state trails, public county gardens, to put on the bottom of lakes and ponds for the fish habitat. It also helps make sand or erosion barriers at waterfronts at a beach or river side. So these would be the first people I would call, because it may be the only phone call you have to make.
Garden Places may have invested in their own wood chipper, so you can take the time to call local gardeners or greeneries to see if they may want your tree.
Tree farmers may want to take your tree back to make mulch for their new seedlings of trees. So give them a call to see if that is something they may be interested in.
Crafting is a great idea to make use of your old tree. If you are not a crafter, a local crafting group may want your tree. Because you can make wonderful things like bird feeders, or add color to a winter garden, make potpourri, and so many other ideas.
There is even the idea of putting it up in your yard throughout the winter to feed birds the easy way. Beware of choking hazard! Because obviously string and other sorts may choke the bird. So the proper way to do this is by using the branches to hang the food. In this idea, you can hang popcorn, fruit, or other things that a bird may want to eat.
The obvious choice is to call your local recycling center or waste management office and ask them what they would like you to do. But hopefully you make this your last decision since they may take the easiest way out to recycle the tree. So if you can make use of the tree in any of the other above means, please do so for your environment!
