I must admit I had my first ever pancake in continental breakfast spread of Super 8 Motel in Pigeon Forge, TN when we went for our vacation to gorgeous Smokey Mountains in Fall of 2007. Those thin rounds of flavored all purpose flour mix weren’t really the greatest thing in that breakfast but they certainly caught my attention. Later in the day we noticed there was an IHOP just down the street. No prizes if you guessed it right- even that was our first ever visit to an IHOP. My wife was first a little apprehensive about the idea of eating Breakfast menu for Lunch!! My wife ordered a Spinach & Mashroom Omelet. It was supposed to come with three pancakes which we asked to bring with Strawberry topping. I got a chicken fajita Omelet and asked for New York Cheesecake Pancake. When we came out of that IHOP, we were already in deep love with that beautiful stack of pancakes topped with syrup of your choice & whipped cream.
We came back to Columbus, OH from our Smokey Mountains vacation with beautiful memories & a Pancake bug. After that we tried several local restaurants Scrambler Marie’s, Bob Evans, Ruby Tuesday, Mimis Café but couldn’t really find my lost love. (We even went to a Waffle house once thinking we will get pancakes there J ) Are you thinking why I am calling it a lost love? Columbus city doesn’t have an IHOP. Ugh.. Can you imagine? The nearest one we have is at around 45 miles and we love to drive there on a Sunday morning & meet our love.
Since then whenever we go out for a vacation, we always try to find if there is an IHOP nearby. I have always read / heard about old fashioned recipes and Grandma’s Pancakes, but haven’t really had a chance to taste one. I am sure Grandma’s Pancakes which always are served with a full portion of love must be making every house in United States a ‘Best Pancake House’.
In Southern India one can find a very similar breakfast dish as Pancakes and it’s called ‘Uttapam’. It’s made from Rice & Lentils soaked in water & ground to a thick consistency. However Pancakes are sweet & Uttapams when had with chutneys are mostly spicy. I am sure even other countries & cultures will have their own versions of pancakes. But undoubtedly it’s the perfect beginning of a day for people of every age.
IHOP stands for International House of Pancakes but don’t let the name fool you. It has a big menu with lots of options for breakfast, lunch & dinner. It will be great if IHOP goes international in true sense & opens franchisees in other countries. Also bring us international flavors in Pancakes.
