You may not have heard a lot about Rich Whitney, if at all. He is the green party candidate in the race for Illinois Governor. While the polls aren’t being very kind to Whitney, his stance on issues that should be important are something to look into. While most people will vote either Republican or Democratic, the Green party should definitely be looked at for this election.
Whitney’s Stance On Education
Whitney has said time and time again that we need to be putting more money into the education system. He not only is focusing on the traditional education system but also on preschool and early childhood education. Whitney is also looking into parenting classes for parents to learn how to be a better parent overall.
How Will This Affect Me?
With my daughter (she is 6), I placed her in a daycare program that had a head start program included from ages 3 and up. I am a firm believer that preschool and early childhood development classes help shape and mold children. While I was able to afford to pay the weekly dues for the school, currently I would not be able to. My son is 5 months and I want to be able to give him the same opportunities his big sister had. Whitney will make that possible with more funding for programs that offer assistance to families that need it. While I won’t be needing it for another two and a half years or so, it is nice to know that my son could have the same chance his sister had without worrying I am going to fail him in some way.
As for the parenting classes he is talking about, I think that is probably one of the smartest things Illinois can offer. While I currently wouldn’t need them, I do know a few people (young mothers) that could benefit from something like this. I wouldn’t rule out taking something along those lines myself in the future. I feel like you can always better yourself through education.
Whitney’s Stance On Family
This is where Whitney is definitely set apart from the other candidates in wanting to recognize and give full benefits for domestic partners, regardless of sexual orientation. He also is for paid leave at the work place for the caregivers/parents of sick children. Another great idea Whitney has is for flexible hours and job sharing to help support families.
How Will This Affect Me?
Family is important for me, as it is most likely to others as well. While I am not currently married to my son’s father, it is nice to see a person that will recognize domestic partnership. I have lived with my boyfriend for almost two years and we have a child together, that should count for something! Also, being that I will be going back to work at one time or another (probably very soon), it would be nice to not have to worry about losing that eight hour day because my son fell ill. That would be one less thing for working parents to fret over.
