LanguageTool is an extension to OpenOffice.org that checks your grammar as you create Open Document Text (ODT) files through Writer, the OpenOffice.org word processor.
Note: Although this document applies generally to installing the LanguageTool extension for OpenOffice Writer running under any distribution of the Linux operating system, it applies specifically to Writer under the Ubuntu 10.4 distribution.
To install the Language Tool extension for OpenOffice Writer running under Ubuntu 10.4, do the following:
1 – Open a new or existing ODT file through OpenOffice Writer.
2 – Click Tools, click Extension Manager, and then click Get more extensions online.
3 – Type languagetool into the Search field, click Search, and then click LanguageTool under Search results.
4 – Click Get it!, select Save File, and then click OK to download LanguageTool-1.0.0.oxt. Close all windows except the ODT file.
5 – Click Tools (in the ODT file), click Extension Manager, click Add, double-click Downloads, select LanguageTool-1.0.0.oxt, and then click Open to start installing the extension.
IMPORTANT: If the Extension Manager cannot install LanguageTool, it displays a long error message. In this case, you need to install OpenOffice.org Office Suite according to How to Repair OpenOffice.org On Ubuntu 10.4.
6 – Restart Ubuntu after the Extension Manager has installed LanguageTool successfully, and then open an ODT file through OpenOffice Writer.
7 – Click Tools, click Spelling and Grammar, click Options, select both Check spelling as you type and Check grammar as you type, and then click OK.
8 – Verify that Writer underlines spelling errors with red wavy lines, and grammar errors with blue wavy lines.
Hopefully, the above procedure has helped you download, install, and use the LanguageTool extension.
