One thing that I have heard a lot of people complain about is when they mount their cabinet handles and knobs, they do not line up correctly and it looks funny on the cabinets. There are few things as aggravating as messing up on a simple project that is visible to everyone. This project is more complicated than it sounds because the slightest difference between handles will look ridiculous. There is a basic way to always install cabinet knobs and handles in the same place on the cabinet.
Make A Jig
Simply drilling holes in the face of a cabinet door is ill conceived as even the simplest tasks require a plan of action. In this case, It will take you 15 to 20 minutes to make a jig that will have you drilling your holes for your cabinet door handles in the same place every time.
Take a piece of 1″x6″ board about 12″ long and attach a 1″x2″ inch board, also 12″ long in the center of the board, dividing the board into two sections. Attach a 1″x2″ board to the bottom of the other 1″x2″ board that is perpendicular to it. Measure where you want the handle to be on the door frame. Using the center and bottom boards on your jig to mark where the handle goes. Use your handle for the hole drilling template. You will need to do this four times, dividing the board into quadrants for right and left side and bottom and top cabinet doors. Make sure you label which holes are for what doors. BL, for example is “bottom left” while TR is “top right.” Then simply line up the jig against the cabinet door frame and drill your holes. Stick the screws through the back of the cabinet and frame and attach the handle. You will be able to do this very quickly because you will not have to measure anything.
Tips and Tricks
When drilling through the cabinet doors and using the jigs, make sure the jig is set up to go on the outside of the door, drilling through the face towards the back of the door. This minimizes chipping out the door finish.
Open all the cabinet doors so you do not accidentally drill on the wrong side of the door or drill into the cabinet frame. You should be able to drill through the cabinet doors while holding the jig.
Cabinetry is one of the main showpieces of kitchens and bathrooms and mounting cabinet hardware is important in making the cabinets look perfect. Using the method above will give you confidence knowing that you can install any hardware you want perfectly every time.
