There are lots of tricks women use to make their wardrobes seem much larger. Wear a certain blouse with a particular skirt one day, and on another day, wear that blouse with slacks and a vest. Women are famous for mixing and matching outfits to make it seem as though there is no end to the clothes they own. Why not do the same for your hair accessories?
Garment tape makes it easy to create an endless number of scarf headbands. You know the ones? They are worn like a headband but are covered by a scarf that flows down past the ends of the headband. The scarf headbands are nice but can cost much more than an ordinary headband. When you make them yourself you’ll pay a fraction of that!
Most any kind of scarf can be turned into a headband, however, the best kind for this project are ones that are lightweight and flowing. Stiffer material, like a bandana, is not ideal. You can use just about any type of headband, though, to make the interchangeable scarf wear. Choose one that has a neutral color or you may be able to see the headband through the scarf.
Lay the scarf out flat on a table. Cut one long strip that’s twice as wide as the headband itself. The strip should be cut on the diagonal; do not use any of the hemmed area of the scarf. Cut the strip so that it is much longer than the length of the headband so that the scarf will hang off of the ends of it when finished. As you cut the strip taper the ends off so they won’t be too bulky. You can temporarily wrap the scarf around the headband to see if you need to trim or taper it a little more.
Find the center of the headband and the center of the material. Place a piece of garment tape along the inside of the headband, going from one end to the other. Wrap one long edge of the scarf over the side of the headband and secure it by pressing it into the tape. Now place a length of the garment tape across the headband again and press the opposite side into it.
Using this technique you can easily peel off the old scarf and put a new one on the headband anytime you want. Now, even though you have only one headband, you really have many!
