This article focuses on two particular Internet Radio stations that I am familiar with, and have had the pleasure of personally working for. Internet radio is a big part of entertainment online. Both of these stations have a majority of DJs who are blind or visually impaired.
The first one I want to talk about is called “2020 The Blink” (The station where you hear the vision).
2020 The Blink is owned and ran by Ms. Dana Nolan, Ms. Stephanie Hill, and three other members of their management staff. 2020 The Blink began on September 12, 2008. They have approximately 18 DJs on their staff.
2020 The blink has shows that consist of many different varieties of music, everything from Country, Christian, Classic Rock, and much more. Their schedule of shows can be Viewed at 2020 The Blink Schedule. of all the DJ’s on 2020 The Blink, only one of them are sighted. The rest of the staff is blind or visually impaired.
The other station I want to talk about is called, “The Q Online” (Internet Radio With Variety)
The Q Online is owned by Mr. Tyrone Whiston. Mr. Whiston has two other people on his management crew. The Q Online started out on November 19, 2006, and will be celebrating their forth anniversary of the beginning of the station. Every year they have their version of a Birthday Party for the station. This year the special birthday party show will be held on the 15th of November at 10:00 PM Eastern. The show will be hosted by Mr. Whiston (DJ T-money). During the show if things hold to tradition, there will be Interviews with DJ’s, special segmants, and of course a great variety of music.
The Q Online has 13 DJs on their staff, and just like 2020 The Blink, the majority of their DJs are blind or visually impaired. Their shows also have a big variety of music. You could hear genres like Oldies, Country, Pop, R&B, etc. Their schedule of shows can be found at, The Q Online Show Schedule
The owners of both of the stations I mentioned, pay for the broadcasting servers, Licensing, and any other cost involved in running the station out of their own pockets. The DJs do the broadcasting basically as volunteers. The DJs are not paid for what they do. In most cases, when asked why they do Internet Radio broadcasting if it doesn’t pay anything, you would be told, “Because I enjoy broadcasting.” The costs of the stations run approximately $40.00 to $50.00 per month, and this is only for the broadcasting servers and the Licensing that is required for the stations. This doesn’t include any other costs that might be incurred by the stations, such as Automation for when there is no DJ on air, and fees that may be accrued by going over their bandwidth limits, or listening hours allowed by the licensing company.
Stop by and check out these two stations when you get a chance. Both stations have means of making requests, and the DJs are happy to play the requests, as long as they have the track requested.
Note: Every DJ is not going to have every song you might want to hear, as they use their own music collections to broadcast.
