We all heard of the joke, “I went to a hockey game and a boxing match broke out.” Well…. I think we all have anyway. But none the less, I have to ask the question, why? I like to watch all sports but hockey; I just cannot get into it. I’m not saying it’s a bad sport but I came to realize why I just cannot get into hockey. It’s because of the boxing matches that are allowed to constantly take place. Now for you true hockey fans, this has nothing to do with you or the sport. I’ve sat down at times and watched some of the Stanley Cup Championship. I have to admit not a lot, but some. But please explain the strategy in the boxing matches.
I understand that many fans recognize hockey does not get the attention that the other major sports do such as baseball, football, and basketball. Now I’m a football fan, and granted, many will tell you that football is a violent sport. But think about this. When a fight breaks out on a football field the referees jump right in to break it up. It’s the same thing in baseball and basketball games. But in hockey……the refs go get a cup of coffee; talk about their next vacation and then say, “hey break it up. That’s enough” and finally step in to break up the fight.
Like I said I watched hockey and think it’s a good and exciting sport. But the fighting part…..well, that just makes me change the channel. Why doesn’t the league try playing the game without the unnecessary five minute boxing matches? Of course fights will happen but break it right up, and promote the game like the NFL have promoted their game and perhaps more fans may come along. I know I would.
