It was an initiative of VW last year to analyze whether fun was the best way to change behavior. The end results are that making something fun does indeed encourage human behavioral changes.
VW held a contest last year to recognize “thoughts, ideas and inventions that helped to prove that fun is the easiest way to change behavior in people.”
The competition for the contest was intense and the winners are posted on www.TheFunTheory.com website.
I highly recommend that you take a moment to watch them as they are hysterical. If we could cage people in the zoos, they would be the hottest attraction.
There is the escalator vs. the stairs. No one wants to climb stairs when you can ride the escalator right? That is, until you make the staircase a piano and each step is a “Key” on the piano. Then suddenly the escalator is empty and everyone (even the people with their dogs!) begins stepping up the steps and music is filling the air. Even the grumpy people begin to smile. Having fun seems to be the best way to change a bad mood into a great mood.
Yet another ingenious entry in the quest to win the fun award is the Bottle Bank Arcade Machine. Recycling is a tedious task and there is nothing fun about it because we are obligated to do it. But if the recycling machine is turned into an arcade machine that blinks, makes noise and offers people points then suddenly everyone wants to play (or recycle) their glass bottles. The recycling increased one thousand fold on the “arcade” machine while the plain, old recycling machine located just down the street remained basically untouched.
My personal favorite is the Deep Trashcan. Picture a trashcan in the middle of the park. Toss a piece of garbage in it and suddenly hear the sound of something falling, falling, falling – deeper and deeper into an endless pit and then suddenly – Bamn! as though it hits bottom. You have to watch the folks try to stick their heads through the hole in the trashcan to see if they can see how deep it is. One fellow actually walks over and begins picking up more garbage just so he can hear it all over again. Amazing ingenuity and I wonder if somewhere down the road we will actually begin seeing these trashcans that can “sound off” and encourage everyone to dispose of their litter appropriately.
After spending almost an hour watching, laughing and analyzing these short clips I have decided that FUN is the best way to change behavior in humans.
