“I am going to be a vampire for Halloween” my twelve year old daughter proclaimed about a months ago.
My heart dropped. Why now? For years they have been Cheetahs, princesses, rock stars, cats, Bible Characters (when I was working for a church), pirates and what not? This is probably her last year she is going to dress up to begin with and I successfully kept her away for years.
With my most authoritarian teaching tune I responded: “You may not. You can’t serve two masters? “And I went on and on. You get the picture. She understood.
But did I? My own line about the two masters confused me and my neighbor. For years churches came up with alternative events for “Tricker Treaters”. There is “trunk or treat”, “Hallelujah Harvest”,” Fall Festivals, “Hallelujah Fun Night”. It’s disguised as a huge outreach for children and their families. But isn’t this called serving two masters too. Wouldn’t it be more honest not celebrating this day at all since churches are so serious about it? For years we declare that our holidays (Christmas, Easter) are misused and misunderstood by the world and we get upset when someone wishes us “Happy Holidays!” instead of ” Merry Christmas!” Are we not doing the same thing to Halloween?
I have helped organized alternative Halloween events for years and never given it a thought that I actually do what I preach my daughter not to do and that is serving two masters. I was surprised that a huge church I sometimes attend decided not to organize an alternative event and regular program will go on as scheduled. I respect that.
Well as you can see I am still confused. I have a hard time telling my daughters not to dress up. I don’t think they want to serve evil or give it a second thought. They want to participate in the dress up and the fun. We still haven’t decided if we stop by at a local church or go “trick or treating” but we are preparing costumes for the big night. And yes I have to practice what I preach and since I am not sure which directions to go I went back to my twelve year old and told her she could be a Vampire. She wants to look beautiful and gorgeous like Ashley Greene. The only abnormal accessory would be the fangs..
My kids aren’t evil and they do not want to participate in evil. They just want to collect candy like everyone else and dress up and brag about it like million of kids do. At this time and age I do not think that Halloween represents what it was or stand for to begin with but rather a fun event where children get to explore themselves in another role or person and where they can test how much courage they have.
What do you do on Halloween?
