I love living in a world where we can use words like “sexting”. Take a sec and say it out loud… It sounds like a word your mother would not be thrilled about, doesn’t it? If you are new to the term, “sexting” is when people take a snapshot of their naughty bits and send it to their partner. Sounds like fun you say? Why would anyone do this you say? It’s actually quite popular among the more adventurous of us. This could be simply a post to enlighten you about this term, but not so fast – it’s illegal.
Sexting has a couple of interesting and dangerous angles beyond the initial thrill it is intended to bring. For starters, texts are backed up and can be retrieved by the service provider if necessary. That alone is enough to make me not do it. Legally it is considered porn, and that is a much larger issue. Technically, if you have images on your phone or computer that are X rated, it does not matter at all that they were sent to you intentionlly, by someone who wanted you to see them.
It gets even better. If the images on your phone are those of a minor, they are child porn. Poisson of child porn in some states is a felony and an automatic classification as a sex offender. I’m totally not kidding.
This is a huge topic to get into the heads of our teens. There have now been court cases that have resulted in jail time and the lifelong label of sex offender for 16 & 17 year old boys. Also, it’s just a good practice to not take compromising photos of yourself with your phone. The person you are sending it may be the love of your life, but what if something happens? It’s just not a good idea to do it in the first place!
