It’s hard to hide them – especially in warm weather when you slip on a pair of summer shorts. Flabby knees are the bane of many women – and some men have them too. Even people who have shapely legs may be self-conscious about the state of their knees. Some people are so concerned about how their knees look that they pay large sums of money to hire a plastic surgeon to do a knee lift – like Demi Moore. Most women aren’t willing to go that far for the sake of vanity but many would love to have a simple solution to this problem. Is there a way to “tone up” flabby knees?
What Causes Flabby Knees?
Flabby knees occur with age-related loss of collagen and elastin – the tissue that gives the skin around the knees its support. They’re also a problem for people who lose large amounts of weight, especially later in life, when they have less collagen and elastin tissue. With loss of fat in the knee area, the overlying skin becomes loose and wrinkly – and, of course, flabby. Flabby knees also become more common as muscle mass declines with age since muscles help to support the knee.
Can You Exercise Away Flabby, Ugly Knees?
Exercise may improve the appearance of flabby knees, but the effect is usually modest. Exercises that strengthen the anterior thigh, such as leg lifts, have the most benefit, but it can take several months of focused resistance exercise to see results – and not everyone gets real improvement. On the other hand, exercises that shape and define the legs may call attention away from flabby knees.
Are There Other Solutions for Flabby Knees?
Don’t be tempted to use one of the flabby knee creams marketed on the internet. The most these creams will do is moisturize and smooth the skin on the knees. They won’t melt away flab. The only cream that might have benefit is Retin-A since it stimulates collagen production, but there are no studies looking at it for this purpose.
People who are disheartened by their flabby knees and have lots of money can get a surgical knee lift, but it’s quite common to have scarring with this type of surgery. Are scarred knees a good trade-off for flabby knees? Probably not.
The best approach? Hide those flabby knees with longer skirts, pants, and dark hose. Chances are no one’s noticing them anyway. Just be thankful you have healthy knees that help you get around. That’s a beautiful thing in and of itself.
