This is my final article in a series aimed at helping people make decisions regarding candy options for this Halloween season. It seems only fair to end the series on a high note, with one of the favorite candy options of all time – – the Tootsie Pop.
Everyone knows that at the center of the Tootsie Pop is that wonderfully chewy, chocolate center for which Tootsie products are so well known. However, half the fun of getting to that miraculous center is licking the lollipop coating on the outside.
Tootsie Pops have been around for three-quarters of a century; not that much longer than the original Tootsie Roll. It was invented in order to give children two of their favorite things in one small package. It worked and the Tootsie Pop has been enjoyed by kids of all ages ever since.
Tootsie Pops come in a variety of flavors including blue raspberry, cherry, grape, orange, strawberry and watermelon. Now they also come in banana and pomegranate too.
Made famous by a 70’s commercial that questioned how many licks it would take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, kids have been enthralled with that question ever since. Along the way, of course, they have picked up a love for the sucker that also housed that delicious chocolate treat.
The question remains: Is the Tootsie Pop a good choice for this trick or treat season? The answer is absolutely!
A single Tootsie Pop can last for hours if eaten correctly. That means less time spent on those easier to gobble down chocolate candy bars.
One Tootsie Pop is only 60 calories and none of that is fat-related. While there are 15 grams of carbohydrate and 10 grams of sugar in each Tootsie Pop, that is far less than some of the other candies I have reviewed. Additionally, there is the benefit of 0 cholesterol and sodium.
There is bad news too unfortunately. Tootsie Pops have no real nutritional value on their own.
Ingredients include cocoa, condensed skim milk, corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, sugar, soya lecithin and whey. They also include artificial and natural colors and flavors and citric acid.
Bright, beautiful colors, wonderful flavors and that secret chocolate center make this a candy that is hard to ignore at Halloween or any other time. Here is my summary review:
Smart Choice? For certain. Not only is the Tootsie Pop economical, it also isn’t a bad candy option for parents who are concerned about the amount of sugar their children consume. Just keep the distribution to one pop. The kids will be happy without putting their long-term health in jeopardy.
Tasty? Yes. Tootsie Pops come in flavors that children love. There is one for just about any discerning taste. But the real treat is that amazing chocolate center that put the Tootsie Roll name on the map.
Variety? Yes and No. There are lots of flavors to choose from so in that respect, the variety issue is covered. On the other hand, there’s no messing with that magical candy center. It has and probably always will remain the same.
Attractive Packaging? Yes. Tootsie Pop wrappers correspond with the flavor and color of candy inside. Sold alone, in bundles or in bags, there is no mistaking the Tootsie Pop for any other lollipop.
Easy to Store? Yes. The suckers are small and compact enough to fit almost anywhere you might want to put them. That could include a candy jar or bowl, a pocket, a lunch pail or of course a trick or treat bag.
Are They Fresh? Yes. Tootsie Pops last for a long time.
Diet Safe? For some. Tootsie Pops are high in carbs and sugar so they should not be consumed in high quantities. However, in small amounts, which is usually more than enough, this candy is definitely a viable option.
Easily Available? Yes. Tootsie Pops are usually available wherever candy is sold. That includes candy stores, grocery markets, drug stores, convenience marts and even discount department retailers.
Price Effective? Absolutely! A bag of Tootsie Pops costs under $2 and will make dozens of little ghosts and goblins happy.
Product Purchase Recommendation? Yes. Tootsie Pops are a right of passage for children. No child should be deprived of this delicious candy treat.
