You’ll Never Spa In This Town Again, by Robert Randolph, likely has some of Hollywood’s finest biting their nails. The celebrity tell-all targets gay activity in Los Angeles’ elite City Spa for men where Randolph was a member for over 15 years. Says Randolph, “I hope you like the view into the secret world of John Travolta, John Amos, John Cusack, Jeremy Piven, Pauly Shore, George Michael, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Billy Zane, Andy Dick, Paul Giammatti, and more.”
Randolph’s You’ll Never Spa In This Town Again is born out of revenge
According to Robert Randolph, on October 25, 2003, as Randolph was leaving City Spa, he was brutally beaten into a coma by another City Spa member, Warren Smith. Randolph claims Smith had a history of violence that City Spa knew about, and that even after Randolph was beaten by Smith, they allowed Smith to continue to use the spa. On December 8, 2003, on the advice of doctors and detectives who were sure Smith would be nowhere around City Spa, Randolph returned, only to face Warren Smith in the steam room. Robert Randolph said he ran out of the spa, naked, to his car in the City Spa parking lot. Someone called 911, but Smith was gone by the time police arrived. Says Randolph, “I was naked as they filed out the police report. I felt utterly betrayed and humiliated by my beloved spa.”
Months later, City Spa refused to allow Randolph to be a member any longer and required him to pay for the spa on a pay-as-you-arrive basis. “I figure if that’s how they treat me, then why can’t I treat them the same. I’ll share every dirty secret I learned in the 15 years I was a member there.”
Should we believe a man on a mission?
When you go to certain private clubs where sexual activity may occur, it’s often a written, but always an unwritten, rule to respect the privacy of the guests involved. When Randolph’s quest is to expose a club’s walls of secrecy, should we believe what he has to say?
You’ll Never Spa in This Town Again is allegedly based on what Randolph saw with his own eyes, plus what others have told him, such as City Spa masseurs. For some of Randolph’s allegations, such as his accusations against John Travolta, gay news about Travolta has actually been circulating long before You’ll Never Spa in This Town Again.
For example, the National Enquirer, correct more often than people would like to admit, showed a photo of Travolta kissing a man as the man boarded a plane. Travolta’s lawyers countered with the statement that it was just a friendly kiss, exemplary of Travolta’s friendly nature. But that doesn’t explain similar rumors about Travolta.
Rumors have existed for years about a relationship between Jeremy Piven and John Cusack. Another celebrity in the book, Andy Dick, has already come out of the closet as being bisexual and was arrested for sexually abusing a man in West Virginia. And everyone already knows that George Michael is gay.
If men in You’ll Never Spa In This Town Again are gay or bisexual – so what?
The final question is, what does it matter? Unfortunately, Hollywood’s celebrities are forced to fit into an image of a heterosexual lifestyle, whether that image fits who they really are. We want the Cinderella marriage and the happily every after, even though the happily ever after rarely occurs with celebrities.
There’s no question that gay and lesbian celebrities exist. However, not all of them are out of the closet. The reasons for this are varied. One of the main reasons has always been that coming out of the closet as a gay, lesbian or bisexual meant that your reputation, and therefore your career, could be ruined. Ellen may be okay coming out the closet and marrying Portia de Rossi, but not everyone has such a smooth ride.
Says gay actor Rupert Everett, “It’s not that advisable to be honest. It’s not very easy. And, honestly, I would not advise any actor necessarily, if he was really thinking of his career, to come out. The fact is that you could not be, and still cannot be, a 25-year-old homosexual trying to make it in the British film business or the American film business or even the Italian film business. It just doesn’t work and you’re going to hit a brick wall at some point. You’re going to manage to make it roll for a certain amount of time, but at the first sign of failure, they’ll cut you right off.”
So, hiding out in the closet, or inside the doors of a private spa, is safer than appearing on the cover of People magazine declaring “I’m Gay.”
Finally, if John Travolta is gay or bisexual, for example, is it too off base to think that his wife Kelly Preston knows about it and, more importantly, accepts it? Not every marriage fits inside the box. Alternative marriages exist whether society wants to accept that fact or not.
