Remember when you were a kid and loved playing with Lego’s? Well, there is now a game that’s sort of like that for your computer. It’s called Minecraft and it’s currently in development, but you can still play it today.
Basically, you are thrown into a randomly generated world, and you can build as you please. There are tons of videos on Youtube already of stuff that people have built while playing Minecraft. Here’s a fan-made trailer for the game. They’re pretty cool videos. If you like sandbox games, or playing with Legos and Knex when you were a kid, you should definitely check out this game.
For those of you who don’t really want to aimlessly walk around and build things, you can also purchase an alpha version of the game for $10. You then get all the other updates for free after that, and the creator of the game “Notch” has said that he’s planning on raising the price up to $20 once the game has been finished and more features have been added.
The alpha version allows you to play Survival mode, which is similar to the creative mode (the free version) except that you have to craft and mine for items and there are monsters. You start out with nothing and then you can eventually make your way to having lots of cool things.
In Survival mode there are day and night cycles, and at night is when all the creepy crawlies come out (they are also deep underground in the mines). It gets really creepy at night if you don’t make a place to stay, and then after that you can start making your armor and weapons.
You can also play online with friends. Currently the multiplayer modes are restricted to people who bought the alpha only, and there is no survival multiplayer (yet). But, other than that, you can play with your friends all you like.
I know the game sounds kind of boring at first, but after you try it you may just change your mind. Just be careful otherwise you might just run out of time to do other things instead.
