What a long, strange summer it’s been. With a major shakeup at FOX’s American Idol– including back and forth replacement judge rumors ranging from everyone from Elton John to Justin Timberlake, the network has finally made it official: resident Dawg Randy Jackson, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and pop star Jennifer Lopez are the season 10 American Idol judges.
At a live press conference on Wednesday- amidst some streaming audio problems- American Idol host Ryan Seacrest revealed that the Aerosmith front man and actress/singer Lopez will officially join the American Idol lineup for the show’s 10th season..
In what may have been the worst kept secret in entertainment, news of Tyler’s Idol contract has been in the news for months and has even been commented on by some of his Aerosmith band mates.
Last month MTV reported that Tyler’s band mate Joe Perry was a tad peeved over news that his Toxic Twin was joining Idol. Perry said, “I mean, after working with me for 40 years, he couldn’t tell me about this….Why so secretive? We’re told it’s a done deal. If Steven is committed to a TV show, that kind of affects the rest of us. We’d like to plan our lives, ya know?”
And in recent weeks, stories of Lopez’ back and forth contract demands dominated the tabloids. People reported that Lopez and FOX eventually settled on a 12 million dollar paycheck.
In a season where Simon Cowell’s departure was a big enough adjustment, two former judges- Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi also fled (or were force-fled) from the hit show.
The news of superstar judges like Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez clearly shows that American Idol may be headed in another direction this season, meaning the judges could be the real stars of this show.
So with this interesting mix of judges, will season 10 of American Idol be the best one yet- or has everyone’s favorite singing competition officially jumped the shark?
Let’s at least wait until the season 10 American Idol premiere to decide.
