Cars are usually required to handle pretty ordinary stuff, like hauling around luggage, people and other such chores. Some people however require a few more out of the ordinary things from their models, such as the ability to withstand bullets fired from high capacity guns, explosions and other such attempts.
That’s why more and more luxury automakers are offering special armored versions of their flagship limousines. Jaguar is the latest to join the pack, as the British company has officially revealed the XJ Sentinel model.
The model is based on the standard long wheelbase XJ, but packs a wide array of armor, bulletproof plating as well as quite a lot of safety equipment under its inconspicuous sheet metal. Still, expect a lot more protection for your buck with the new model.
“The XJ Sentinel was designed and developed in partnership with industry leaders, and incorporates the very latest armoured vehicle systems to deliver extremely impressive levels of protection, while maintaining a very discreet appearance,” said Mike O’Driscoll, Managing Director, Jaguar Cars. “The XJ Sentinel is the ultimate armoured luxury limousine. It offers governments, security organisations and private individuals, the highest level of security, with advanced design, refined performance and a beautifully-crafted cabin. The XJ Sentinel will be the vehicle of choice for the most discerning,”
More specifically, the new Jaguar XJ Sentinel is sufficiently armored to achieve the B7 level of ballistics protection. In usual terms, it means that any medium-size explosion as well as regular gunfire won’t affect the British limousine.
Instead, special armor plating, bulletproof windows, as well as a set of 19-inch wheels with Dunlop run-flat tires will allow the XJ Sentinel to get its occupants safely away from any danger in a hurry.
This feat can also be attributed to the powerful, naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine sitting under the bonnet, capable of outputting 385 HP and 380 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox and can take the car from 0 to 62 mph in under 10 seconds. While that’s not particularly impressive, bear in mind the armored XJ weighs a whopping 7,275 pounds, so it’s not the more agile car on the market.
Other improvements like the Jaguar High Performance Braking System, as well as the upgraded suspension with adaptive dampers were also added. Expect the same wide array of options to be available, so that owners can customize the XJ Sentinel both on the outside and on the inside.
The armored XJ even comes with a three-year or 50,000 mile factory warranty and almost all of its systems can be repaired at any authorized Jaguar dealership. Customers will also be able to access driver training courses, and stay in contact with specialists in case any trouble arises.
The new Jaguar XJ Sentinel has yet to be priced by the British company, but expect more details to be made available in the near future. Until then, those wanting a bit more protection with their limousine can check out the 2010 Moscow International Motor Show, where the XJ Sentinel will be showcased.
