Because of multiple health issues, I decided to give a gluten free diet a chance. Eating out is a major challenge because there really are not gluten free restaurants that I know about. One of the biggest issues is that I love sandwiches, but you would be hard pressed to find gluten free bread at most restaurants. Most restaurants have some wonderful sounding salads, but cost far more than a simple sandwich loaded with good veggies.
Jason’s Deli Gluten Free Bread
I was happy when I saw that Jason’s Deli offered gluten free bread. Jason’s Deli now uses Udi’s Gluten Free Bread. When I asked about the gluten free bread for the make your own sandwich, I was asked if I wanted to look at the gluten free menu. I thought it was great to see a restaurant seeking to address the gluten issue. I ordered a turkey sandwich on the gluten free bread and found it to be a decent sandwich. The slices are larger than the store bought version of Udi’s Gluten Free Bread. The full sandwich in fact was enough for two meals for me.
More Gluten Free Options Needed
There is a lot of work needed to help those who need to eliminate gluten for health reasons. A big issue is the concern with cross contamination. Something that is naturally gluten free can be contaminated with gluten because it is processed on the same equipment as foods made with gluten. I hope there will be a change to eliminate the cross contamination problem.
I applaud Jason’s Deli for making a great effort with offering gluten free bread and a separate menu to highlight gluten free items. I hope more restaurants follow their example and offer gluten free items, including bread, for their gluten sensitive customers.
