Jennifer Aniston retard comments end a rather busy week. The Jennifer Aniston retard gaff put her on the wrong side of the blogosphere, as the Jennifer Aniston retard slip balanced out all the praise she won days earlier. The first time she made headlines for something other than promoting The Switch, she got in a battle with Bill O’Reilly over artificial insemination, and single motherhood. But when she was on Regis & Kelly on Thursday morning, the Jennifer Aniston retard mistake put her on the wrong side of the crosshairs.
While talking to Regis and Kelly, Aniston brought up her recent Harper’s Bazaar photo shoot, where she impersonated Barbra Streisand. She said she was playing dress up, which she does for a living “like a retard.”
The Jennifer Aniston retard comment sounds worse than it was probably intended to be. In context, it appears she was referring to herself in that way, and poking fun at her own “dress up” abilities. However, even using that term to make fun of herself may skirt the p.c. line.
Once again, someone has gotten in trouble for using unpopular, politically incorrect words. Of course, Jennifer Aniston retard flak may seem funny to Dr. Laura, after her n-word debacle. Aniston supporters will say she meant no harm in using her offensive word, and didn’t use it with offensive intent. Some have been saying the same thing about Dr. Laura and her situation, although it is an entirely different issue.
The word “retard” does not have the unique stigma of the n-word, although it is just as derogatory to a group of people. Tropic Thunder also got in trouble for using the word in 2008, though it was for satirical purposes. Sarah Palin, who is defending Dr. Laura and her n-word context, also attacked Rahm Emanuel for using the “r-word” to describe anti-Obama protestors months ago.
The Jennifer Aniston retard slip up may not rise to that level of controversy. At the least, it caps off a very eventful period of promoting The Switch, which finally comes out today. Earlier, Aniston was attacked by Bill O’Reilly for saying that kids don’t always need a father, then shot right back at him. In that debate, she got a lot of support for her choice of words, but it might be different this time.
These two incidents have wound up getting more attention than the movie itself, as it turns out. In fact, The Switch has opened with mixed reviews, with many saying that Aniston is wasted, while Jason Bateman carries the film. But at the least, she isn’t getting bashed for it like she was for The Bounty Hunter this spring.
Ultimately, the Jennifer Aniston retard controversy, and the one between her and O’Reilly, has made her big with the tabloids once again. Yet once again, her tabloid performances may have bigger buzz than those of her movies.
