The Yankees always make a splash every year going after the big free agent. Before the start of the 2009 season it was CC Sabathia. Sabathia has been dominate since becoming a Yankee, he has started 68 games for the Yankees and has accumulated 40 wins and 15 loses, and he had 197 strikeouts in both of his two seasons. Beside Sabathia the Yankees don’t really have any stable, consistent starters. This year the big name is Cliff Lee. Lee could offer the Yankees the best one-two punch in baseball. Besides his falter in the World Series, Lee had been dominate in the playoffs. Since the Yankees make the playoffs every year Lee would be a huge asset. The Yankees are likely to outbid all of the other teams for Lee. With the majority of the Yankees attention going toward Lee, it seems that they are more concerned with signing Lee and resigning Derek Jeter.
The question then arises, Who should the Yankees be more concerned about signing Lee or Jeter? As previously stated above, we all know what Cliff Lee is capable of doing for the Yankees. But in my opinion, Derek Jeter should be the top priority. Jeter is the captain of the Yankees and knows how to win. Since he came up to the majors, the Yankees have won 5 world series titles including 3 straight from 1998-2000 and in 2000 Jeter was the World Series MVP. Jeter is up with the Yankee greats like Ruth, DiMaggio, and Mantle. Not signing him would be a disgrace to him and everything he has done for that team. Jeter says he can still play and he can do so at a high level. Being the Yankees with a never ending amount of money, I say pay him however much he wants for whatever he wants. Cliff Lee will only play every fifth day. Jeter, on the other hand, plays every day and is a fan favorite.
