In the interest of full disclosure, I have never really been a fan of Joe Scarborough and I have not really paid that much attention to his stands on issues or opinions but I must say that after reading this article about the way he stood up and took responsibility without passing blame, he is truly the man.
“Joe Scarborough, the host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, was suspended for two days without pay Friday for donations he made to GOP political candidates.” “At the time some of Scarborough’s political donations also came to light and MSNBC said he had sought prior permission for the donations, which were made in 2006.” “But when Politico began making inquiries about additional donations between 2004-08, many to political friends and family (including Scarborough’s brother) in Florida, Scarborough came clean to MSNBC president Phil Griffin.” “In a statement, the former Republican congressman admitted to giving multiple $500 contributions to his “brother and three longtime family friends.” “These contributions were nothing more than simple acts of friendship. I gained nothing personally, politically, or professionally from these donations.” “None of the recipients appeared on his show.” “I recognize that I have a responsibility to honor the guidelines and conditions of my employment, and I regret that I failed to do so in this matter. I apologize to MSNBC.” (Guthrie, Marisa, 11/19/2010, Mediaweek, MSNBC Suspends Joe Scarborough, Retrieved from www.mediaweek.com ).
My wish is that others see how he reacted and take their cue from him. We all make mistakes and the only way to not repeat them is to learn from them. We can never learn if we do not first admit to them. Joe Scarborough demonstrated exactly how to listen to our better angels. I do believe that this MSNBC policy is a little outdated but it is their policy and by them holding Olbermann and Scarborough to the same standards means that MSNBC is alright by me. I question whether Politico has ever questioned those commentators, journalist, reporters and analyst from Fox, CNN and even from their own organization. If the roles were reversed, would Politico hold their people to the same standard? He who is without sin may cast the first stone.
