Jon Stewart rally plans stole the spotlight last night. But although the Jon Stewart rally will restore sanity, no rally might have been possible without Stephen Colbert. His March To Keep Fear Alive serves as the counterpart to Stewart’s gathering, as they will both square off on Oct. 30 in Washington. However, the March To Keep Fear Alive was not the first idea for a Colbert rally. In fact, both the Jon Stewart rally and the March To Keep Fear Alive might not have been possible without the call to “Restore Truthiness.”
After Glenn Beck’s big event in Washington, Internet bloggers began to talk about how a Stephen Colbert gathering would go. Soon, a website formed to call for a “Restoring Truthiness” event starring Colbert on Oct. 10 in Washington. All signs pointed to that being made real last night.
When the Jon Stewart rally announcement was made, Colbert promised an even bigger announcement on The Colbert Report. There, he announced the March To Keep Fear Alive, to be held on Oct. 30 alongside the Rally To Restore Sanity. Whereas Stewart is limiting his event to moderates and the non-hysterical, Colbert wants the crazies to drown them out once again.
Although the March To Keep Fear Alive is the ideal rival to the Jon Stewart rally, it technically wasn’t what Colbert rally fans were calling for. They wanted him to Restore Truthiness on Oct. 10, but now they have an extra 20 days to get ready, and may get to drown out Stewart while they’re at it.
However, the calls for a Colbert-centric gathering got this whole ball rolling, even though Jon Stewart rally news overshadowed it at the last minute. Nevertheless, those at colbertrally.com are pleased at the March To Keep Fear Alive, and have already made their mark in other ways.
As part of their efforts, the Restoring Truthiness followers raised over $200,000 for one of Colbert’s favorite charities, Donors Choice. They have helped their idol fund numerous classroom projects, and hope to get up to $500,000 by Oct. 1. As a result, Colbert himself sent his thanks in a message to Reddit, where the rally calls got started.
Brainstorming by Reddit users has now led to the March To Keep Fear Alive, and the opposition from the Jon Stewart rally. It may not have been exactly what bloggers had in mind when they started this movement, yet it is even more ambitious than they dreamed.
The Jon Stewart rally and the March To Keep Fear Alive will have their ultimate fear vs reason showdown on Oct. 30 at the National Mall in Washington. Since Stewart’s moderate crowd is harder to entice to rallies, the Colbert rally troops and their fear-based tactics have the early advantage. However, they haven’t been challenged like this until now.
