Closing arguments are being presented today in the Oakland County Circuit Court on the shooting death of Oak Park Public Safety Officer Mason Stamborski in 2008. 18 year old Jonathan Belton is accused of shooting the officer outside the Rue Versailles apartments (located near 10 Mile and Greenfield). Officer Stamborski had picked Jonathan Belton up while driving on a suspended license and taken him home. There is debate over whether Officer Stamborski had injured Beltan and Beltan had shot Stamborski with his own gun. Beltan’s Defense Attorney Geoffrey Fieger who, Michigan residents will remember, ran for governor against John Engler in 1998 and is known to be sharply outspoken, claims that the gun was accidentally fired. Judge Rae Lee Chabot called Fieger’s claims ‘pure fiction’, earlier this week. County Prosector Ken Frazee maintains that Beltan intentionally shot and killed Officer Stamborski.
