Before you read this, make sure you read pt. 1: Kanye West “Runaway” Music Video & Review: Spiritual Symbolism
In the next scene, Kanye plays music for the bird or “fallen angel”. The bird seems to become comfortable with the music. She even gets up and starts to dance. Of course, there is some symbolism behind this. Satan (also named Lucifer) was an angel who played music while he was in heaven. Because of this, there is no surprise that the “fallen angel” or “fallen bird” in this video seems to be comfortable when music starts to play.
In the next scene, there’s a little boy running through a deserted area wearing all red. Biblically, this color symbolizes sin and lust. The bible speaks of the “harlot of all harlots”-a reference to a very rich and very sinful city called Babylon. The bible refers to the sinful city as “a woman dressed in purple and red”. One of the biggest issues that God had with the Babylonians was that they worshiped other gods. Is Kanye worshipping other gods? You be the judge.
Back to the video. The boy dressed in red is carrying a torch that emits red smoke. Later, Kanye and the bird watch a fireworks display together. The bird seems to be in awe of the fireworks, possibly because it’s fire! A song in the background plays saying “turn up the lights in here”. When Satan/Lucifer was in heaven, he was called “son of the morning”. The name Lucifer also means “the light bearer”. This explains the bird’s fascination with fire and lights.
Next, a marching band of men wearing red and black (biblically symbolizing sin and evil) play music as they carry a float that looks like a Michael Jackson head. On both sides of the float is a white angel and a black angel. Of course, it can be a symbol of good and evil and/or a symbol of Michael’s song Black or White. Some say that song has spiritual meanings, too.
At the end of that scene, there’s the child wearing a white KKK outfit and carrying a torch that emits white smoke. Because there was child dressed in all red (sin) in the beginning of the scene, and another child dressed in a white (good, pure or clean) KKK outfit, it could be a subliminal message that there is something humane or good about evil, and something evil about good. What I mean is, the image that was dressed in all white was a KKK member. KKK members used to claim Christianity, yet they went around burning crosses of black churches. They didn’t display Godly behavior. Maybe this scene is trying to say that people who claim they’re good or holy are the ones that are evil beneath it all.
In the next scene, they are at a dinner party, and everyone there is black, yet the servants are white. The reverse slavery is possibly a stab at those “KKK members”. Kanye later starts playing a white piano as ballerinas dressed in black come out of nowhere and dance. I found this scene to be the most boring, yet the most disturbing. I don’t why. It lasted the longest out of all the scenes because he performed what the video is named after-his song Runaway. I feel like there is an underlying message in this scene, but I can’t grasp what it is.
I viewed the ballet dancers as a legion-a collection of demons or fallen angels. I don’t have much to support this theory except for the bird calling them statues at the end of the video. She said statues are phoenixes that have broken their wings. More fallen angels? The bible does say that there were angels that chose to leave God’s kingdom with Satan. Maybe these dancers symbolized these angels. After the dancers leave, the guests at the table applaud.
In the next scene, A bird is served at the dinner, then the phoenix gets up and hysterically screams in horror. Her screams scare the other guests, and they leave the table to run away.
At the end of the video, the phoenix tells Kanye that she must burn so she can go back to her “kingdom” so to speak. Kanye doesn’t want her to leave. He tells her he’ll never let her burn. They then kiss. There was one scene that looked like the two of them were having a sexual encounter. I have heard on the History channel that Satanists practice different rituals-one of which involves putting a woman upon an alter and calling upon the spirit of lust. Another Satanists that was a guest on the Tyra show said that Satanist believe in indulgence. Perhaps this was Kanye and the bird engaging in indulgence. Afterwards, she ascends to the sky and starts to burn.
