If you are one of those people who loses several hats and scarves each winter, you can make this easy duo in minutes and keep warm this winter. The key is fleece fabric. You can do things with fleece you can’t do with any other fabric. It’s thick and fuzzy and keeps everything toasty. Fleece comes in lots of colors and pattern choices and it has just enough stretch to make it do exactly what you want. Since you’re making a band, it will keep your ears warm with no tell-tale hat head left behind.
1/2 yard of at least 60 inch wide fleece
1 spool of polyester thread
Make your Headband
-Measure your head with a tape measure to determine the length of fabric you will need for your headband.
-Cut the band piece your head size plus one inch for a seam allowance
-Cut your band fabric 8 inches wide.
-This measurement is for a headband wide enough to cover your ears, For a narrower band, cut the width 7 inches or less.
-Fold the lengthwise edges together and pin them into place at the 1/2 inch seam line.
-Stitch the seam, leaving 1 inch unstitched at each end to turn your band when you’re done sewing
-Iron the seam.
-Turn your fabric right side out and iron the seam again.
–Pin the ends together right side to right side.
-stitch the ends together
-Iron end seam. It will be curvy, so do the best you can.
-Turn your band and close the lengthwise seam with hand stitches.
Make Your Scarf
-Cut your scarf fleece 9 inches wide and the length of your fabric (approximately 60 inches)
-For an easy fringe, cut a series of strips 1/2 inch wide and 4 inches long at each end.
-Cut your fringe stripes 1/4 inch wide for a ‘fringier’look
-Fleece won’t fray, but if you want added detail do a zig-zag stitch along the full length of each side.
-For a different look, buy a strip of decorative fringe at a fabric store and add some to each end.
Make a Quick Fleece Hat
If you simply must cover the top of your head, make a quick fleece hat.
-Cut a piece of fabric the same length as your headband and 12 inches wide.
-Cut a fleece strip 1/4 inch wide and 6 inches long
-Stitch the hat ends together.
-Iron your seam
-While you still have your hat right side in, gather the top evenly and tie it tightly with your 6 inch strip
-You may wish to add a few stitches to keep your strip in place
-Flip hat right side out. and it’s ready to wear
-Scrunch it. Roll or fold up the bottom when you wear it.
