Some dogs just plain like to eat their own poop. Or even worse, their own poop and any other droppings they can find. It typically starts when they are puppies, and some dogs grow out of it, and some dogs just keep this nasty habit into adulthood. While it’s gross, there are ways to end this nasty poop eating behavior.
Puppies typically eat poop because they can. It’s smelly, it’s available, it’s interesting. Adult dogs eat poop for a variety of reasons: boredom, lack of nutrition, hunger, anxiety, to clean up their kennel, genetics, or perhaps they enjoy the taste. For whatever reason your dog eats their own poop, if they are basically healthy, clean, and well-fed and get ample attention, you need not worry. It can often be just a habit they haven’t grown out of, and you can stop the behavior quickly.
For starters, make sure you are picking up your dog’s poop regularly. A dog can’t eat poop that’s not available. Make sure you feed your dog at least twice a day so he does not go hungry, and keep his living area clean to avoid stress if you leave your dog outside all day (shame on you). Give your dog ample attention and exercise, and the most key tool to getting your dog to stop eating his poop is to command him to “Leave it” firmly when he goes sniffing at his poop, hoping for a snack.
Don’t ever yell at or strike your dog if you catch them eating poop. Simply command firmly that they “Leave it” and after a few go rounds your dog should learn quickly that poop is not to be eaten, just like the garbage and your shoes.
For a chronic poop eater you can buy products designed to make your dog’s poop taste bad to them. For natural methods to get your dog to stop eating its poop, try pineapple, spinach, or garlic as a treat to make their poop taste terrible to them. You can also buy pills at your local pet store, like Deter, or Forbid that when given to your dogs make their excrement taste like crap. These regimens work to make your dog repelled by their own poop so they will quit eating it.
While the situation is a gross one, you can easily train your dog to stop eating their poop. Be patient yet firm, take care to keep your dog and yard clean, and reward your dog for ignoring its own poop and you should be able to end their poop eating behavior for good.
