ABC’s “Modern Family” features a great ensemble cast, but the kids on the series often steal the show. Here’s a look at the “Modern Family” brat pack- and some of the best one liners from the kids on this hit comedy series.
Haley Dunphy. The oldest Dunphy child (played by Sarah Hyland), Haley is all teen: self-centered, shallow and always with a cell phone in her hand. She has her parents pegged, saying, “My mom’s not dumb. You can’t just ask her to do something for you. You have to very carefully put the cheese in the trap” and “Dad may be a doofus but he is 10 times better than any pizza delivery boy.” In the episode “Fears”, Hayley shares with us her biggest fear of all: “Never getting my driver’s license, or getting one and the picture sucks.”
Alex Dunphy. The Dunphy family resident geek, overachiever Alex (played by Ariel Winter) prefers a night at the library to hanging at the mall, but her favorite thing to do is foil her naïve siblings. She tells her parents, “Can I remind you you have one child who’s not mediocre?” Alex dishes out some zingers that sometimes go right over big sister Haley’s head, but in the end it’s all back to basics. Alex’s motto is, “You’re never alone when you have books”.
Luke Dunphy (Nolan Gould), The Dunphy family’s dumbest child (his dad’s words, not mine) Luke is a typical kid, who often innocently blurts out things that he shouldn’t. Case in point? Luke blabs that his mom referred to her father’s young wife as a “coal digger” (he misunderstood the phrase “gold digger”). And when he thinks his parents say, “Don’t talk black to me” (instead of what they really said– “Don’t talk back to me”), Luke ponders, “How do you talk black? End words with izzle?” Out of the mouths of babes.
Manny Delgado. The mature and serious Manny (Rico Rodriguez) may only be 11 years old, but he’s wise beyond his years. During the family’s trip to Hawaii, Manny tells Luke, “I noticed some lovely tweens down by the kids’ club. Maybe we can find a nice spot near them by the pool and send over a couple of virgin mai-tais.” At Christmastime he says, “If this so-called Santa Claus doesn’t bring me a burgundy dinner jacket, I’m going to have a big problem”. And as for kids his age he says, “Ugh… kids… you don’t have to tell me. My school’s full of them !” But in the end, Manny , whose biggest fear is “dying alone”, keeps it real, saying, “My mother says we are never to use the word ‘step’ because it means not real, and we are a real family.”
Dylan (Reid Ewing) Haley’s boyfriend is dumb as a rock but on the episode “The Incident” he said one of the most profound things of anyone on this show, reciting, “I’m not used to this, the whole “big family” thing. In my house, we don’t even talk to each other. You know it’s funny, the first time I saw Haley, I knew I liked her. I mean she’s beautiful and everything, but it’s it’s not just that. She’s got this killer confidence. You know, the kind of confidence that you get from having a family like this, that’s passionate and accepting of hot foreigners, and gay dudes, and nutty people. You know, a family that actually loves each other.”
“Modern Family” airs on Wednesday nights at 9:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
